A CANCER noon FOR NURSES

Because we read and hear so much about it. some of. us may think that there is too much "sound and fury" concerning cancer. that it is. after all. an un- common disease and that the aver- age nurse or doctor will see only three or four cases of cancer a year. Nevertheless. although a doc- tor may see only a few cases of cancer each year,-these cases may account for half the deaths in his practice. Also. untreated cancer. unlike many other ills from which a patient may recover without medical treatment. is progressive and always fatal.. I am quoting freely from "A Cancer Source Book for Nurses." published by the American Cancer society. Inc.

For years we have been reading about the great amount of work -being done in laboratories by our patient cancer investigating phy- sicians and laboratory technicians: then about the cancer specialists who treat 'the disease by use of radium. x-ray and surgery; and. finally. about the general practit- ioner who is now alert to cancer or "cancer conscious" in examin- ing skin riiscasc. lumps in the breast, indigestion and other dis-

turbances of stomach and intes- tine. and the uterus in women. This has meant that instead of

months or even years passing be- fore cancer is diagnosed. it is now discovered sometimes in a matter of weeks. It can then be cured.

As we read this booklet on cancer wriilcn expressly for nurses. we can sec how the various organizations fighting cancer are sparing no effort or expense to make known the striking fact that cancer in its early stag:-s can be cured. As stated in the little book. "An interest in cancer engenders those inquiring habits of mind and discriminating facts which produce better nurses and better doctors."

None of us can learn too much about cancer. man's second great- est foe. To know more about it is to fear it less. An unconscious fear of cancer is not solely confined to laymen. It is present in the minds of doctors and nurses. Only through fl diffusion of knowledge can this fear be removed.

Many years ago, sir William Os- ler. the -greatest of modern phy- sicians. taught his pupils that "he who knows syphillis knows medi- cine." Today. nowthat syphilis can be conquered, his statement might well be. ”He who knows cancer. knows medicine."

COTTAGE PUDDING WITH FRUIT COCKTAIL SAUCE

Pudding:

1X3 cup shortening

Isa cups sifted all-purpose flour 213 cup granulated sugar

21.5, teaspoons baking powder

1 983

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Sauce :

2 cups canned fruit cocktail

1 cup syrup from fruit cocktail

la. cup water

2 tablespoons cornstarch

U3 cup granulated SUSHI

Few grains salt

1 teaspoon lemon juice

1 teaspoon grated lemon rind

Pudding: soften shortening in mixing bowl. Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt; add to shortening with unbeaten egg. milk and flavoring. Beat for two minutes. Pour into greased 8- inch square pan. Bake in moder- ately hot oven (375 degrees F.) 30 to 35 minutes. Cut in squares and serve warm with cocktail sauce.

Sauce: Drain fruit cocktail. Heat syrup and water. Add cornstarch. sugar and salt blended together and cook and stir until clear and thickened. Remove from heat and blend in lemon juice and rind.

Serves 6 to 8.

Children Are Overanxious To Shift Care Of Aged Parent

DEAR MISS DIX: I am a- man in my late 30's. and come from a family of ten children (five girls and five boys). All are married except me. I live with my mother. who has Iigned her house over to me. I am tb take care of her for the rest of her life. She is going on 72. and about four month: ago was taken iii no that she now needs constant care. I have asked my sisters to come one day a week each to take care of our mother and pre- pare the meals while I am away at work. Two of my listen live out-of-town. so they can't come but the other three listen and one sister-in-law were taking turns at my mother's car: until two weeks ago. Then my slatera refused to continue their help I0 I had to hire a woman to come to do the work. My younger married brother wants to take mother and have his wife care for her. I will pay her hoard. doctor's bills and for everything . . she will need. But. I don't think it right or fair for my ulster-in-law to take over this job when my own sister: have refused it. I am seriously considering sending my mother to a home or hospital. going out to board myself and renting the house to help pay hospital expenses. Do you think I would be doing the right thing? TER- ANSWER: Your ulster-in-law is certainly 8 DBNEOH among W0- men to be willing to assume the care of an elderly and sick mother- in-law whose own daughter: are unwilling to take on the respons- ibllity.

SISTERS N0 HELP

Your sisters bear out the ifruth of the old adage. "One mother can take care of ten children. but ten children cannot take care of one mother." They may relent the fact that your mother's house is signed over to you. but this seem: like a fair arrangement since the financial responsibility seems to be entirely on your shoulders. Furthermore. a ten-way division wouldn't give any one child much anyway.

The most suitable solution to your problem would be. in my estimation. to continue the present arrangement of hiring someone to come in every day. but since it is the obvious answer I suppose there must be some reason why it can't be done. If the reason is financial perhaps you could get. the other sons and daughters to give you a little assistance here. since they refuse to give of their time.

Your decision about a home or hospital should. I think. rest on your mother's feelings. In the willing to go away. or does the idea upset her greatly? If she is too adverse to the suggestion. you might take advantage of your angelic sister-in-law's good nature and let her have your mother-for a while. at least. to see how matters work out. Your mother is, after all. of considerable age and probably won't be with you too long. The least you can do-and your sisters and brothers. if they could be convinced to see it that way-is to make her last years as happy and comfortable as possible.

DEAR DOROTHY DIX: I was engaged to be marrledl to a girl who insisted that we should each be free to have dates with the op- posite sex without interference or questioning. I met a woman who invited me to play chess with her. which was our mutual hobby. She made it very plain that our relationship was entirely platonic. I agreed. and we spent many pleasant hours at the game. Then my fiancee found out about the platonic woman and the platonic woman found out about her and they both blew up. I reminded each of her demands and agreement. but it did no good. Now each one spends a lot of time saying what a heartless man I am. Please tell us be- wildered men. just what does woman think she wants?

That goes about as far toward ex- plaining the inconsistencies of women as you are likely to get. and it is something that is unpredictable and that no man can ever under- stand.

Also. your experlence goes to show that there is no such thing as platonic friendship. at least as far as women are concerned. It ii: the smoke screen behind which a woman does her courting.
