Testing Seeds.

A good method of testing seed is a table plate that is not warpped, and a pane of glass large enough to cover the plate. Then take two circular pieces of moderately thick cloth, and make them moderately wet; spread these over the plate, and place the seeds between them. The plate should then be covered with the glass to pre- vent evaporation from the cloth, and placed in a room of comfortable living temperature. A hundred seeds or more ol cach sample shoutd be used and the lot should be well mixed before taking the sample. The seeds should be frequently examined, and may be removed as they sprout, when by sub racting the number that fail to sprout from the number put in, the’ per cent. of vitality may be readily found. It is a good plan to place the cloths in boil ing water for a few minutes before using them for a second test to destroy any pores or mycelia of mold with which they may have become infected. The time required to germinate varies great ly in different seeds, so that it is not possible to give any definite rule to go by. The operator will have to be guid ed by his own experience in determin ing the time necessary to sufficiently

test a lot of seeds.

Stable Doors.

An exchange says to have the stable doors cxtra high and wide. Horses dislike to bow the head when going in at a door too low for them, and there is great danger of skittish horses striking the upper door facing with their heads. his makes them shy of low doors ever after. And the width of the stable door is important, too. Narrow doors are dangerous to the safety of a young or shy horse. Hips have been dislo— cated by the horse going out with a rush, and striking the door facing. A horse once hurt in this way is ever after shy of a narrow door. ‘Three feet is not wide enough for a stable door. None should be less than four teet wide and six and a haif or seven feet high. Besides, large doors are convenient to tilose who have to work about stables. ‘hey are better when removing the bedding, or putting new bedding They afford more ventilation in sum-— mer, and they are safer tothe man who handles the horses. And after having the stable doors made large, take care always that there are no projecting nails or pieces of timber in the facings,

No business will pay unless conducted upon correct principles. But it de— pends largely upon the farmer. If he is made of the right kind of stuff and has a level head, he will make farming pay. ‘The twentieth century farmer should be unlike those who have peg- ged away on the same plans since Columbus discovered America. He should be properly balanced as to brain and muscle, and should use the former fully as much as the latter. Farmers who are making their business pay are built this way. No farmer of sound mind and unimpaired health should fail at farming, for it; more than any other occupation, is suggestive of its own requirements preceding success. —Agricultural Epitomist.

Dressed Hogs Active in Montreal —Chicago Firm—Liverpool Unchanged.

According to the Gazetie there was a slight improvement in the demand for smoked ineats in Montreal on Monday and a feir trade was done; but other lines were quiet and prices all round were eteady. We gue: Canadiaa pork, in barrels, $11.50 to $16; pure Canadian lard, in pails, 74c to 7 3 4° per pound; and com~ pound refined, at5cto Sic per pound. Hams, 1%c to 12c, and bacon, 10cto 12¢ per pound.

There was a good demand for Cressed hogs, insmall lots, and the market is fairly active and firmer at $5 60 to $5.75 for lightweights, and at $5.25 to $5.40 for heayy per 100 lbs.

There was little change in values for provisions in Chicago on Monday, the market being firm throughout the season. Pork closed $8.074 December, $9.40 Jan~ vary, $9.674 May. Lard closed $5 07} December, $5.12} Janurav, $535 May. Short ribs closed $455 December, $4.72} January, $4.80 May.
