Up to the year 1865 Russia possessed 8,000 elementary public scheols, with 280,000 pupils. A new fish, which is like a ‘‘shad of the herring species,” has been observed during the last two years in the waters of Lake Un- tario and the Sc. Lawrence. Shoals of them are said to have appeared at oe Bay. They are good articles of food, and from six to eight inches long. In some of the river,
