_reports related to U.P.E.I.

We will also use some

stories from C.U.P., our national news service. the purpose of these national stories is to show what situations exist on other campuses and how these are dealt with, and also to give relevant national reports which are not made available by the commercial press.

_The Student Union at the University of Prince Edward Island has won two legal decisions making residences here the first in Canada to be placed under the provincial Landlord and Tenant Act and Rent Review Act.

Under P.E.I.'s Landlord and Tenant Act, resident students get full tenant' rights, while the Rent Review Act restricts rent

increases to 8% per year except where costs are shown to rise more than 8%.

‘ The main argument of Studen Union President, Derek Key and lawyer John Carr, that the university is not above or outside the law of the land, was upheld by both provincial Rentalsman, John Comeaun and the P.E£I. Supreme |Court.of Appeals.

In his decision, the Rentalsman lowered the

university's rent increases_

Under the former lease— rent agreement, the univers sity administration had the right to immediate room inspection or eviction.

:However, the Landlord ‘and Tenant Act stipu-—

lates a 24 hour previous notice required for room inspection and a 30 day previous notice for eviction under any non- criminal circumstances. The university is still allowed to charge a caution fee of no more than one month's rent, but thiS’ will no longeribe avail- able to pay for damages to common areas in the re— I sidences, as was previous- _ly the case.
