Candied Apples

Choose apples oi varieties which do not break in cooking-Spy. Dc- liclous, Tolman Sweet or Russet will be satisfactory.

Mr. D. Leo Dolan Ad- dresses Summeride Meeting In Interest Of Tourist Develop- ment;

The appeal of Prince Edward Is- land as a. Maritime Province with its beaches and opportunities for restful vacation was stressed by D. Leo Dolan, director of the Canad- ian Travel Bureau. in an address before a meeting convened in the interest oi ,the tourist indusiry. in Prince Edward Island at Summer- side last night.

-Development oi summer colon- ies by ghe sea was urged by Mr. Dolan, who stated that he saw in this the principal attraction of the Maritimes. Mr. Dolan also stressed the importance of keeping Canada typically Canadian saying that if he had any word of warning for those interested in the tourist in- dustry it was to maintain Canada's place as a foreign country to its American visitors. The _ largest year Canada has ever had in the tourist industry was forecast for 1986 by Mr. Dolan.

Mr. Dolan will address the an- nual meetlng of the Prince Ed- ward Island Travel Bureau in Charlottetown tonight and will re- turn to Ottawa on Friday.

A feature of the meeting was the showing of a colored motion picture of Prince Edward Island on parade exhibiting varied attract- ions of the province for summer visitors. H. T. Holman was chair- man of the meeting-S.

Agitation for veierans‘ aid, as the result of the depreszlon, promp- ted Congress to pass a bill author- izing loans up to 50 per cent of the face value of the certificates. Pres- ident Hoover vetoed the proposal. but the Senate quickly over-rode the vetojo to 11 and the House 328 to ‘l9.

More than 3.000.000 veterans have taken advantage of these loans, re-t ceiving (1)1115 interest) 51.163.144.548.

In 1932, while thousands of for- mer service men, membersof the bonus army, besieged the capital demanding full payment of the bonus, the House passed the Pat- man bill providing for oath pay- ment of the certificates. Two days later, however, the measure was killed by an avalanche of votes in the Senate.

In 1935 the Patman bill cleared the hurdles in both Houses with ease and was sent to the While House, where it was vetoed by President Roosevelt. The President set a. precedent by delivering his veto in person to a joint session of congress. The Hone over-rode him within a few minutes after he left the‘ capitol, but the senate sustain- ed the veto 54 to 40.

Fishmeal Largely Consumed in Germany

Large quantities of flshmeal are consumed in Germany. White fishmeal from Canada's Atlantic coast has proven very popular. Norway is the chief source of sup- ply, followed by Japan. the Ulliifld States, Great Britain, Iceland, ac- cording to the Industrial Depart- .ment of the Canadian National Railways. Canada supplies a. com- paratively small share of the mar- ket. There was a considerable drop in imports for the first- nine months of 1935 as compared with the year previous. Imports from Norway and other countries with which Germany has "clearing" agreements have been well maln- tained while purchases from the United States and Canada have been adversely affected.

The proud Queen of the North Atlantic bankers, growing old now after a life of bright achievement, seems destined to spend the rest of her days in the more quiet bypaths of the sea.

A snug haven in some peaceful inland harbor, for from the Atlan- tic's turmoil. or the easy existence of an exhibition ship, appear in prospect for the aging racer. For Bluenose has earned her retirement.

Her life has been a. hard one. She has had- te beat back one United States challenger after im- otiier to hold to the International Fisherman's Racing Cup she brought to Canada in 1921. Hard-fought races, some of them were, even for Bluenose. but she has never parted with the trophy.

And on the banks, in fair weather and foul, she has done her turn with the rest of the Lunenburg fishermen. No pampered pet of the racing courses, Bluenose looked for no favors when it came to the work- aday drudgery of the fishing, and more than once she sailed smartly into Lunenburg ‘with the biggest catch of this port's famous fleet.

But those days are just about over now. "No, I don't think she'll ever fish again," says Angus Wal- ters, Bluenoses skipper ever since she slid down the ways into Lunen- burg Harbor 15 years ago. He speaks a bit sadly; for Angus and Bluenose, to the men who follow the racing fishermen, are what Lip- ton and his Shamrocks were to the inilllonalres branch of salt sea rac-
