Results of October fur business in Toronto for the month of Octo- bcr shows a drop of up to 30 per cent. one exception is in a large department store which reports sales as much better. some fur- riers blame the lack of cold weather. others put it down to the high price of furs. increased taxation and cost of living. Musk- rat, usually a strong seller. is re- ported by some furriers as slow because its high price puts it out of reach of the business girl.

Women's Wear Daily has a page entitled Furs4elling This Win- ter's Fashions-with mink still the leader in quality furs. The broad range of mink colors has acted to the selling appeal of this fur with best-liked shades the dark ranch mink, the Silverblu, Aleutian and Pastel. In New York interest in the Aleutian shade has picked up considerably. Buyers advance as the reasons the desire for a new medium color for the customer who has already had a light or dark mink. and the trend to gray in ready wear fashions that makes the taupe-gray undertones of the fur a good complimentary color. Of course there are many other furs shown as being featuredsuch as sheared opossum. natural sheared raccoon. Alaska scnl. Pers- ian lamb, sheared beaver and of course silver fox and its mutat- ions.

Discussions still keep up in the fur magazines as to the factors that have caused the decline of lower priced furs and Womcn':: Wear Daily sums it up as pro- motional over-emphasis on mink and this appears to be the belief of most retailers throughout the United States. Los Angelcs, Cal.. stores say that some 75 to 90 per cent of the total dollar fur sales is going to mink and- related furs. local furriers feel certain they have made selling of that fur so easy it has cut deeply into possible sales of other furs forcing volumes down. The same story comes from Philadelphia but even more cm- phatic. Fronl Pittsburgh. Morris Azen says: "Too much stress has been placed on mink promotion. I believe it is one of the ills of the business that furricrs have made the customer so mink conscious that the psychological affect has been that she feels that she won't be happy with any other kind of a fur coat."

Dates for the annual Fur Farm- ers International Pelt Show. spon- sored by the Wisconsin Fur Breed- ers Assocoiation. have been set for January 9th to lith. according to Harley Wittig. President of the Assoclation. Both fox and mink pelts will be shown with the latter to be displayed raw and fur side out. Prince Edward Island breed- ers have never to our knowledge entered pelts in'these internation- al pclt shows but western Canada ranchers frequently do. It would be a wonderful thing if some of our bcst pclis could be sent to this show and we believe that. they would land at the top or very close to it.

The most successful fur scaling season in several years is report- ed by the Canadian Department of Fisheries. which records that Canadian sea ers took more than 200,164 seals cm ice flows off the coast of Newfoundland and Lab- rador this year. The regular monthly and an- nual meeting of New Glasgow Womenls Institute was entertained at the home of Mrs. Revell Dick- icson on Monday evening, Nov. 4. The meeting opened by singing "O Canada". followed by two minutes silence in remembrance.

The need to develop stu- dents who can adjust to chang- ing conditions, and the tendency to stress co-operation more and competition less, were emphasiz- ed.

Suggestions and questions on the course of studies. especially those on Literature. writing and Arithmetic were dealt with; Writ- ing particularly being stressed. Mr. Ross showed two interest- ing and instructive films on "Dis- cipline" and "Who will Teach My Child."

These are among many curious facts' about the average Briton unearthed by the British Institute of Public Opinion.

Asking thousands of Britons thousands of questions over the last '15 years. Institute interview- ers'here have discovered that: The average woman is five feet, four inches tall. weighs 130V, pounds, has brown hair and blue eyes. and believes the way to her husband's heart is through his stomach.

The average man is five feet. eight inches tall, weighs 155 pounds. Chicken and roast pota- toes are his favorite meal. He prefers soccer to other games, dogs to cats. brunettes to blondes. He would pick his wife not for looks but for skill in making him comfortable at home.

The majority of husbands and wlve here say they want no more than three children.
