A Snap Election

Premier Shaw‘s announcement last evening of the calling of a pro- vincial general election on Doccmber IO certainly fulfilled one political requirement. It must have come as an embarrassing shock to his op- ponents. it wouldn’t be stretching the truth too far to say that it comes as an unwelcome surprise to everybody outside the Government.

With the uncertain stability of the Par- “liament at Ottawa, teetering on the ;_brink of dissolution at any hour of the day or night—and with the prospects of another federal election brought closer by the latest state- ments of the Social Crcdit lcadcr in Qriebec~this further venture into the unexpected and unknown leaves us. at least. completely flabbcr- gasted.

The Government was elected in September. 1959, and there is no call for it to go to the. country until next summer at after our farmurs have ('omplt-‘lcrl their spring chores. All the. issues named by Premier Shaw in his surprising statement; could be, rcsolvcd just as easily then as now. However. the decision has been made. otherwise, and that's the Government’s privil- ege. We think it a regrettable one, and that it will prove a disservice to our merchants and everyone else concerned with business problems at. this time.

A Great Lady indeed

"Status" symbols are all the go these days, the big powers having what they regard as the most po- tent status symbol of all in the nuc- lear bomb. But that is a hellish fallacy. It is to the qualities that make for national greatness, for cul- ture. for enlightean leadership in humanitarian causes, for all that the wisest of mankind have sought to achieve throughout the centuries, that the meaning should be applied. There are. such status symbols. even 'hl our time. To the common people of 'mny nations, on both sides of the Iron Curtain, the late Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt was regarded in this light.

As widow of the late. great {President Franklin D. Roosevelt, ‘Mrs. Roosevelt naturally held a. ‘position of honor and esteem. But it was her own endearing qualities. Ind the zeal which carried her into ,sd many worthwhile activities, that

She was one of the first prominent white persons to join the fight for Negrocs' civil rights. She headed the failing effort to swap tractors to Castro for prisoners seized in the unsuccessful rebel Cuban invasion. She even lent her stature to a series of television Commercials because the advertising gavc her an opportunity to plead for food for the. World's hungry people.

Honors continued to come her way. and she used them always for \vorthy ends. She was named the most admired woman in the world in a Gallup Poll in 1961, for example, and in the same year there was established at the University of Colorado the Eleanor Roosevelt in- stitute for Cancer Research. De- spite her travels. her lectures, her voluminous writings in newspapers and periodicals, she found time for such grandmotherly activities as knitting for her kin and seeing that no birthday or anniversary in the family was neglected.

There will be many tributes paid to this noble. woman, this great- hearted champion of the distressed and the unfortunate. None. we vcn- lure. to say, will come. closer to the truth than the inspired words of her devoted friend Adlai Stew... ..1 “She would rather light candles than curse the darkness, and her glow has warmed the world." .

The Appointed Time

Prime Minister Diefenbaker may be accused of uttering trite re- marks when he said, in Toronto the other day, that the Cuban crisis brought the. world to the brink of war and made an end to tho liter- monuclear race imperative. Rut we do not, think such criticism is war- ranted. Too little attention is being paid to what this crisis involved and to the need for putting its lessons to account in a general as- sault on cold war tensions.

One concrete step in the right direction has been proposed by U.N. Secretary-General U Thant. to the effect. that U.N. control posts be set up in the Caribbean and the United States to protect Cuba from attack. This would ease the Cuban situation permanently. Then the Berlin deadlock could be tackled in the same practical manner. If the worst trouble spots could be re- movcd lhcre Would be less lcmpta— lion for the. big powers to persist in nuclear tests, which already have contaminated the air and filled the skies with deadly radiation.

The present situation gives mankind a chance to come to its senses on the matter of nuclear ex- plosions; and perhaps there won’t be many more such chances. The United States has just announced the end of a. series of test-s in the atmosphere. and the United Nations has given overwhelming approval of a Canadian proposal for an end to nuclear tests altogether.

This, in biblical terms, is “the appointed time” for the nations to turn from the way that leads to de- struction. Could such words be more appropriate at any time in world history than they are today? No “handwriting on the wall" was ever more imperative. No ancient pro- phet ever had greater cause to in- voke Divine wrath on a stiffnecked generation if today’s warnings pass unheeded.

At present, Mr. Badanai points out. municipalities have difficulty in borrowing ade- quately for their needs, and they must pay expensiver high interest on rrowings. Sometimes they even have to take the unattractive step of go- ing abroad to borrow. “When I was Mayor of Fort William, we were always being high-pressur- cd to borrow money in New York,“ he said. But he never did that. and even though his city than had to pay higher In» terest, it is now far better off than it would have can with foreign indebtncss, owing to the lower exchange. v no the Canadian dollar.

The greatest flight ever ob- served literally darkened the sky on September 16. 1948. A single bald eagle was in the van- guard. He was followed by an armada stretching as'far as the eye. could see. In one hour, 7.- 500 broad-winged hawks soared by. In all, 11,392 hawks were counted on that memorable-day.

The golden eagle was consid- ered a rarity in the East until observations proved that it is a regular transient along the Kit- tatinrny Ridge. A Pennsylvania orithologlst, who traveled thous- ands of miles in the west in vain hope of seeing a g olden eagle, finally glimpsed one a few miles from his home over Hawk Mountain.

SLAUGHTER 0F HAWKS

Fo many years, hunters sie- iloned themselves on Hawk Mountain and slaughtered the birds as they flow by. So many empty cartridge cases were. left on the ground that junk dealers found it profitable to collect them.

In the days before the Sanc- tuary, only the Hermit of Hawk Mountain, a recluse who lived in a hut, tried to protect th e hawks. But in 1934, Mrs. Charles

Noel Edge, of New ork City, leased the mountain top. e had it posted and patrolled in

time to stop the shooting th at fall. The Hawk Mountain Sanc- tuary Association was formed, and it has purchased two squre miles of the mountain. opened trails, built shelters, and erect- ed a headquarters building with an auditorium. ‘

By Dr. Theodore R. Van Dellen LEECHES are found in lakes and ponds and are abundant in tropical forests and bushes. They attach themselves to man while he a or in: in infected waters. Infernal hlrudlnaials is so un- common in this country that few of us have ever heard about it. Small leeches adhere to the lining of the larynx. up- per respiratory tract, wind- plpe. or esophagus. The ensu- ing irritation leads to boars ness, cough. nasal obstruction, or nausea. In such instances. the tiny leeches are swallowed in drinking water. They also may enter the bladder or pel- vic organs when swimming in infested lakes or ponds. This leads to a variety of urinary symptoms. Anemia often fol- lows of large amounts of blood. Death may occur rom obstruction of the air passage-

Removal is the only treat- ment. Leeches on the skin will let go promptly when touched with vinegar or a lighted ciga- ret. But when they are located inside the body. elimination is more difficult. The bladder must be irrigated with strong solu- tions. For respiratory tract infestation, the physician must pass a bronchoscope into the passageways and pick them off one at a time. Prevention consists of boll' g the drinking water in infested areas and staying out of lakes and ponds that contain these worms.

This aspect of the leech is seldom mentioned when We read of their usage in ye olden days along with bloodlettinz, purging, and cupping.
