A romantic story is being told of one of the members of Gilmore’s band, which has just returned from Europe. While they were in Berlin, and at one of their most crowded concerts, a lady sereamed “It is he,” and fainted. A German Countess, of great wealth and social distinction, had recognized her long absent son as a member of the American orchestra, whom she supposed to be dead. He had spent a fortune in dissipation, and as a last resort made his musical culture available, no one among his confreres suspecting his rank and former position. Too proud to write of his position to his family, they had given up the expectation of ever hearing from himagain. The band were playing “The invitation to dance,’ when this little scene occurred, and very soon papa—the Count (the name is’not given) led the wanderer to his mother and sister, who embraced him with emotional fondness and exclam- ations of joy. It is said that Gilmore has fost one of his cleverest musicians by this recognition.
