Advertising Canada

Tue Canadian Executive Commissioner

for the World’s Fair, Mc. J. S. Larke, has a scheme on hand for advertising Canada that is worthy of the most serious consider-

ation. His idea is to bring the foreign commissioners im attendance at the Expos- ition to Canada and allow them to see the

country for themselves. In his opinion all

that is necessary is to bring them here, the countr7 will speak for itself. Mr. Larke recently laid his scheme before the Minix- ters at Uttawa, und they have the matter under consideration. He thinks that every possible advantage should be taken of the means that present themselves for advertising Canada during the progress ot the big show at Chicago, as well as after its close and before the foreign sioners return home.

It has been pointed out in connection with Mr. Larke’s suggestion that the com- missiouers would probably only desire to see certain points or sections uf the Dom- ion, which wouid be « different thing to taking atrip to all the provinces, and, therefore, the Government could not very well ask Parliament for au appropriation for the purpose of carrying out the saggestion. In view of this, Mr. Larke thinks that some of the leading _ cities and municipalities throughout Dominion shvuld take the matter in hand and arrange for the entertainment of these distinguished visitors should he be successful in his efforts to bring them to Canada ;

eral verdict of all who see it. A recent issue of the Chicago Times devotes a good deal of space to

the exhibit of cheese, grasses and grains, especially the cheese. We make the follow- ing extract from the Times’ article :

“Perhaps you think green things won't grow in Canada. If you do, go round to the On- tario pavilion in the agricultural building and learn otherwise, Ontario has a great display of grains and grasses—and peas. Especially strong ow peas is the Canadian exhibit. There are al, varieties of peas there. C. W. Young, of the Cornwall Freeholder, who is the chief information man for Ontario, says that On- tario raises the bulk of the seed peas used by the big seedsmen of the United States. But Ontario farmers do not confine themselves to

. Their pavilion—a fine one, too— {tricked out with all manner of grains. People think Ontario cannot raise corn, but there is some as fine corn in display as may be fouad even in the Iowa section. The grain has a triple classification; there is a grain in the straw so artietically arranged, Then there are sheaves bound to show how things grow up north, timothy that is six feet high and wheat that is pretty near astall. There are cheeses from Quebec, Ontario and jthe Maritime Provinces. Canada beats the world on cheese.”

The World's Exposition, THE MINES’ BUILDING.

Tuis building con'ains products of the mines in every part of the globe. England and Australia, France and Mexico, Ger msny and the United States, Denmark and Brazil, Canada and Cape Colony, old coun tries and new countries—ali are represented here. The building is 70) feet long and 350 feet wide. In point of architecture it is excellent, though it is not so strikingly grand as some of the other great buildings

A good way to get a first general view of the exhibits is to enter the gallery at onc The gallery is 25 feet high and 60 feet wide By walking around its edge a good view o! ail may be obtained. The French exhibit is even yet unready, but it will, evidently, be worthy of the French nation. That oi Germany is large and well presented. Th: great iron-monger Stuman has given a striking exhibition of the products of his mines and workshops in railway fittings and pipes for waterworks, and the mineralo- gical display of the nation, seen in this gallery, is large and varied. A large section of the building is occupied by the exhibits of the various States of the great American Republic. The exhibits of the mining states of of Pennsylvania, California, Colo- rado, New Mexico, Oregon, Arizona, Mon- ana, etc., are dazzling. ‘*That’s a dandy,” **Just look there”; ‘**You bet, that’s fine,” —are among the remarks which one hears in reference to those things that seem to be particularly good. The lively young American male or female is remarkably free and outspoken in the expression of opinion and feeling.

Seven states, which we are apt to sup- pose are agricultural states, are represent- ed here by minerals of remarkable value. For instance, Obio, Indiana and Iowa ex- hibit coal, stone, petroleum and other valuable minerals. A very fine block of csnal coal is shown inthe Indiana section, and lowa exhibits the ‘Black Diamond Hollow”—which is, to the ordinary visitor, one of the most interesting features of the mineral exhibit. Thereis shown by the States a great deal of old and curious litera- ture in connection with mining, anda sys- tematic collection of minerals from Ward’s National Science establishment in New York presents one of the most valuable of the many great object lessons in the Mines Building. A number of machines for re- ducing ore are shown in operation, and the “American Tin Plate Manufacturers” have done their beat to make it apparent that America is not dependent upon Great Brit- ain in respect to tin wares.

Great Britain is not particularly strong in this part of the exposition. But Greater Britain is creditably represented from both hemispheres. One of the most impressive exhibits in the Mines Building is made by New South Wales. Attention is at once directed to it by the great arch by which it is spanned, On this arch it is set forth that the total value of minerals

of 1891 was $453,353,378, of which $187,- 758,698 was in gold, $54,978,350 in silver, $124,195,672 in coal, and $46,300,228 in tin. The geological exhibit of New South Wales is a spleadid one—rivalling that of Canada which is certainly one of the best in the building. The geological survey of Canada has indeed put its best foot forward, and the Provinces of Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia presenta collection of ores, which, for variety and richness, are not surpassed, Nova Scotia shows a pyramid representing the quantity of refined gold taken from her mines to be 551,000 ounces from 762,056 tons of quartz. The North- west Territories show some fine blocks of lignite coal. Besides the ordinary metals of coramerce Canada exhibits nickel, phos- phates, asbestos and many others of more or less value. Many of the most interesting exhibits in this building, as in all the other buildings, are those of enterprising in- dividuals who wish to direct public attention to the things in which they are interested.

Altogether the show here is calculated to remove the mutual ignorance and prejudice of the nations and to inspire a spirit of thankful- vess to the Giver who has so widely and bounteously distributed his gifts that all may have a share.

The great German gun founder has a large building all to himself. He shows a lurge quantity of ordnance, including the biggest gun outside the infernal regions. Krupp evid- ently expects torun a profitable trade with Uncle Sam; for his exhibit and the building which contains it must have cost him a mint of money.

S1r,—In the course of iast night’s sermon on missions Rev. Mr. Brewer made the astounding statement that there were at pre- sent over two hundred million heathens in excess of a century ago.

Can it be that Christianity is on the wane, or is the rev. gentleman mistaken? He also admitted that the churches were quite apa- thetic. Does this prove that the people are not in sympathy with missions, as before.

Trickery Unveiled. (The Empire )

Unpleasant incidents at the Behring Sea Arbitration have been mumerous and they seem to have demonstrated a general atti- tude on the part of the United States un- becoming an honest and honorable nation. First, we had the discovery of the forged documents upon which so much of the American case rested; then the evidence that an official report prepared in 1890 by Prof. H. W. Elliott, of the Smithsonian {nstitution, by instructions from the Harrison Administration, had been sup- veessed; and finally the angry utterances the United States counsel regarding cheir unwillingness to break up the award { it should go against them.

Particulars are now to hand regarding his Report of Prof. Elliott, which prove to ‘3 very interesting. Mr. J. C. Carter, in

ying to explain at Paris why the Govern- nent had suppressed it, went out of h's way to be abusive and intimated that it was ‘wholly unworthy of credit, unworthy of »tblication and umworthy of adoption.” Chis, Prof. Elliott naturally resented, and ina letter tothe New York Times, dated May 25, gives his version of the matter. He states that his recommendations in the Report, given after an elaborate study of seal life and habits in Behring Sea, em- bodied the stopping of ali killing on land fora season if the british would cease killing in the open sea forthe same period (which Lord Salisbury was willing to ar- range); the sending of a joint commission up to the islands to investigate; and the reference of the subject to arbitration. But one of the British contentions was that the killing upon the islands by the Alaskan monopoly was really the only injurious part of the pursuit of seals, and it therefore did not suit the American Government to make public such a proof of its being in the wrong, althou;sh Prof. Elliott had been promised that his Report should be promptly published. And in faee of their own official investigation, Secretary Foster issued an order in 1891 permitting the killing of 60,000 seals on the islands. No wonder the docament was suppressed ! But how can the American counsel now have the audacity to talk about humanity as being the basis fur their attempt to give the Alaskan Company a monopoly of the whole Behring Sea and the entire seal in- dustry? For that is what their cliim practically amounts to,

This, however, is not all the trickery which has been brought to light in con- nection with the now famous Elliot re: port. Last month the Washingson ccrres- pondent of the Detrict News gave public- ity toa little incident which is said to have occurred at the time Prof. Elliot presented his report to Mr. Blaine, then Secretary of State. Our ambassador at Washington, Sir Julian Pauncefote, was very persistent in asking Mr. Blaine for the document, but his requests appear to have been diplomat- ically evaded by the statement that it was not yet finished. Finally, according to the correspondent, Sir Julian happened to meet Mr. Elliott at the Corcoran Art Cal-

lery, and casually said :

‘*] wish, professor, you would hurry up the presentation of that Behring Sea re- rt.”

‘** But I have presented it long ago,” re- sponded the professor.”

‘** That can hardly be possible,” said Sir Julian, ‘tas Mr. Biaine has just told me you had not reported.”

‘**Then I will satisfy you by sending a printed copy of the report to your lega- tion,” concluded Prot. Elliott.

This was done, and Sir Julian cabled it to the British Foreign ftice similtaneouely with Mr. Blaine’s cable that the report was delayed. Oa the following day the British minister called on Mr. Blaine and was informed once more that it was not ready. The Secretary of State’s feeling may be better imagined than described when Sir Julian promptly handed him the copy he had received from the Professor, and stated his pleasure at being able to acquaint him with what his sabordinates were doing. Naturally the Elliott report has not since then been a popular subject of discussion in Administration circles at Washington or Paris. But it serves to illustrate the trick- iness of our opponents inthis and other diplomatic discussions or disagreements.

Aneother Sensational Horror.

CLAUNCEVILLE, Que., June 5.

The community has been thrown into a state of intense excitement by the discovery of the bodies of Mr. and Mrs. Edyourd and their daughter in their home on Saturday. To all appearance, they were all murdered during the night by some person or persons unknown The house was set on fire. A despatch from Claunceville says that some believe that Edyourd in a fit of temporary insanity killed his wife and daughter and then committed suicide; but this does not explain the burnin#;of the house.

The Fal) River Tragedy.

Fatt River, June 5

Joseph Carneiro, suspected of the murder of Bertha Manchester, is under arrest, charg- ed with homicide. ‘That he reaily committ d the murder, there appears little room for doubt in view of developments. On the day of the murder in a shoe store in this city he offered for a pair of shoes a silver trade dollar apparently brand new and a silver half dollar with a hole in it. Coins of this description were known to have been in Bertha’s bureau drawer.

Killed ia a Theatre.

LEGHORN, June 5. During a performance in Alfieri Theatre a bey fell from the gallery to the floor, and was killed. A panic followed, and many were crushed and biuised.

A Negre Lynched.

Decatur, Ill,, June 5, A mob took a negro named Sam Rush from jail and hanged him toa tree. The prisoner was accused of outragiag two white women.

Five persons were burned to death by fire at midnight in a five-story house.

Toronto, June 2 —Level-headed party men who attended the Conservative meet- ing at Orangeville are delighted at the re- ception accorded to Hon, Mr, Foster and other leaders, and say that McCarthy is not in it as far as Cardwell is concerned.

Toronto, June 2.—To-day being the national anniversary of the fight at Ridge- way, the volunteers’ monument in Queen’s Park was decorated with towers by the veterans of 1866, who marched thither in procession. Speeches were delivered by Lieutenant-Governor Kirkpatrick, Hon. Lieut.-Col. J. M. Gibson, of Hamilton; Lieut.-Col. George Denison, and others.

Montreal, Jane 2.—The Sir John Mac- donald Club met in force and decided to send their secretary to Kingston on Tues- day next, to lay a splendid wreath of nat- ural flowers on the old leader’s grave, the 6th June being the anniversary of the late chieftain’s death. The club also decided to undertake the construction of a building, to be known as “‘Sir John Macdonald Hall.” The same to be the headquarters o the Conservative party in Muntreal. When this business had been finished an influen- tial committee was named to provide for a reception to Sir John Thompson, upon the Premier's return from Paris in July next.

Panis, June 2—The Pope is reported to have agreed to nominate for the cardinalate of the consistory on June 19, Archbishop Lecot, of Bordeaux, and the Bisnop of Lodez. The Pope was urged by the Church in France to take this step in view fof the numerical weak- ness of the French cardinals in the event of a conclave,

Dustin, Jane 2.—Jt was announced in the bankruptcy court yesterday that there was no estate to meet the claims against Michael Davitt, who was compelled to go into bank- raptcy because of his inability to meet the costs of the proceedings successfully instituted against him by P. Mahony, his Parnellite antagonist in the North Meath election, to de prive him of that seat on the ground that clerical intimidation had been used in his be- half. The cottage that Mr. Davitt occupies is the property of Mrs. Davitt, and cannot, therefore, be touched in the bankruptcy pro- ceedings,

Ferrst Fires —An Amherst, N. S., des- patch of June 2 says: Forest fires in the sur. rounding country rage with fury, thousands of dollars worth of timber being destroyed, with no signs of rain to quench the flames. In- formaticn received here states that Young’s wood is on fire starting on Indian reserve and running irom Halfway river to river Herbert, destroying everything in its progress hetween Barronsfield and river Herbert. Fire took possession of the road and threatened Read’s house, the furniture having to be removed. In Westmoreland fires have already done a vast amount of damage to property, farms being reporte1 in danger in Shemogue district. Rob- ert Kay and Harvey Copp had fourteen hun- dred dollars worth of property destroyed, fire getting among the latter's brow of nine thous- and logs at Rocklyn on Cape Tormentinue line.
