SU Elections held" on March,

13th and 14th, I feel it is my responsibility as Chief Electoral Officer to clarify v the duties of my position.

It is my responsibility to follow Nomination ‘ and Election Procedures as out- lined in the UPEISU Con- stitution, Article 16. In the event that. any issue is not stated in this article, it is then my duty to make a decision

on my own to the best of my

to attention the issueof the disqualification of one of the candidates, Kevin O’Brien, in the said election. On Wed- nesday, March 13th aformal complaint was made tome by

union that a campaign poster of his had been seen in the cafeteria. I went ' to the cafeteria and removed (the poster. .. I then informed-the candi- date in question ‘ that the poster had been found and removed and that he was ' officially disqualified. Article 16, section D, subsection 15 states, “All election posters and .propoganda must be removed and cease the night (1,1:55 p.m.) before. the

0n the same day, I was 'issued another formal com- plaint that the same candi- date was not an active membr of the UPEISU, as he was not a full-time student. Article 16, section A, sub- section 1 states, “Candidates for office must be active members of , the UPEISU.”

The issue was raised about disqualification procedures. There are no formal dis,- qualification procedures out- lined in the constitution, but on the nomination form each candidate signs it is stated that, “... failure to abide by every rule will result in im- mediate disqualification.’ ’

Upon opening the poll on Thursday morning, the posi- tion cf Vice-President Aca- demic was removed from the ballot. ~

At this time I would like to say to Kevin that I am sorry for all that took place and deeply regret what I had to do. I know now that you do understand and for that I thank you. I ' on Thursday when the polls closed, I made ‘ the announcement that I was de-

laying the counting of ballots. .

to invalidate the election. I delayed the counting of bal- lots to find out if this peti- tion was real and if in fact the election was invalid. I did not feel that it would be fair to count ballots and announce winners, only to have to call a re—election later on.

I cannot help but feel that I am somewhat to blame for all that took place. I went into the election not fully

understanding my position and this may have been the reason for much of what happened.

In making my decision I“ tried to take everyone’s views into consideration and tried to meet everyone halfway. I

’ have discovered that this can- not always be done. I would

like it know that I did not consciously side with anyone, but did my best to keep an

Dear Editor,

I would like to express thanks, on behalf of the WUSC-UPEI Local Com- mittee, for the overwhelming support given us by the stu- dents in last week’s refe- rendum.

The fact that almost 87% of the people who voted sup- ported the referendum is an indication of the concern that we have at UPEI for our fellow man.

The funds raised by this student donation are the basis by which UPEI will support a refugee. This money by itself is net sufficient, and will be augmented by funds raised from within the com- munity. ‘

It is expected that the com- munity will much more re- sponsive to a fund-raising drive given that the students have contributed about $3500. This drive will begin-as soon

as the logistics can be worked out.

WUSC-UPEI is also con- sidering the implementation of several other prOgrams in the next six months. We will

make - attempts to ensure

that the students are kept informed.

Any students wishing to become involved should check the newspaper for times and dates of meetings, or check with any member of the Local Committee.

Everyone is welcome and we encourage all students, to give us suggestions. .

I would also like to than all those who gave freely of their time to work on the campaign.

In spite of all that has

happened, the situation was not all bad. This has de- finitely beer. a learning ex- perience for me in many ways, as I am sure it has been for others.

There are a lot of people who I would like to thank for their support and en- couragement; it- was much needed and greatly appre-

ciated. I will not mention names here but I do hope you know who you are. I will try to thank you all person- ally in the near future, if I have not done so already.

In c105ing I would like to thank everyone, especially the candidates, for their

patience and understanding. And to my deputies, who were my right and left arm — thanks, girls.
