. At Christmas we celebrate a joy: “fal thing. the lovely story of Christ and a cade of peace and good will, Fo-be aware of its religious im- plications is not to turn one’s back on its merry-making and pleasure. If ‘our pleasures are innocent, they are what we were meant to enjoy at this season, not ‘for themselves: but as a token of our release from the petty cares that plague our daily living, and keep our minds and hearts ob- sessed with the demands of existence.

Today, beneath the thick layer of commercialism, Christmas exists as it always has. We respond to its tid- ings, and feel at one with our kind. Strangers salute each other on the streets, the streets themselves seem to smél}.of cooking feasts, and the very atmosphere is charged with gladness. For the. children, of course, the day has @ magic all its own. It is in their wonder that we can best recapture
