Thieves broke into the Cathedral of St. Denis, this afternoon, and stole a quantity of gold and silver articles, including pre-| cious relics and crowns of historical value. | Thirty-two articles in all were stolen and | their intrinsic value is estimated at 100,000 francs.

Woodley's old shoe factory, destroyed by fire last night, belonged to Mr. James G. Ross, and was managed by Mr. Grant. | The fire was not discovered till the factory | waa in a blaze. It is insured for about $50,000 in various companies, principally the Royal, City of London and Citizens, Loss. including machinery and stock, over $100,000. The water supply was good, and the firemen worked well. Had the reof not fallen early, the surrounding property, which is mostly wooden, must have all gone.

Lenpox, Nov. 24.

It has been officially reported to the Gov- ernment that widespread distress is feared in Ireland this winter The districts most seriously affected, through want of em- ployment on farms and the failure of the potato crop, are Sligo, Ballina, Swinford and the greater portion of Galway. There is mach destitution in West Clare and Connaught. Owing to a continuously heavy demand upon Irishmen in America to support the Land League, there has been a considerable decreas+ in the remittances to the struggling natives in Ireland. This has reduced many natives to the condition of being unable to purchase new seed,

The Marquis of Salisbury, in an address before the Scottish Conservative Club at Edinburgh, last night, taunted the Liberal Government wit: having adopted its pre decessor’s Egyptian policy. He strongly denounced the action of the Government toward Ireland and condemned the Arrears of Rent Act. He had he said, favored the schemes of peasant proprietory that were now impossible, as the church surplus fund had been otherwise disposed of. Stigma- tizing the vagueness of Gladstone's utter- ances, he said : ‘‘ I confes: 1 do not often envy the United States, but their institu- tions possess one feature which appears to me a subject of greatest envy—namely, their magnificent institution of Supreme Court. If their Parliament passes a measure inconsistent with the constitution of the cenntry, there exists a court that will negative it at once, thus giving stability to the institutions of the country, which, under the system of vague and vain promises here we look for in vain.” His remarks were received with applause.

The health of the Hon. Hugh C. Chil- ders, War Secretary, is broken down and he has been ordered to ge abroad.

The Toronto branch of the Dominion Alliance lately passed a resolution con- demning the Dominion Government for a supposed promise to the deputation of Licensed Victualler with reference to allow ing taverns to keep open later on Saturday nights than the present law allows. A copy of the resolution was sent to Sir John. In his reply to the letter acknowledging the receipt of the resolution, Sir John says : ‘* I think it is to be regretted that the Alliance did not make some erquiry before taking the trouble of passing this resolution. The Licensed Victuallers did not in any way endeavor to secure by influence the exten- sion of the hours of Saturday night liquor selling, nor does the Deminion Govern- ment intend to make any attempt to relax the present restrictions of the sale of liquor in any Province of the Dominion.”

Two marriages are shortly to take place which will unite one of the Roya! families of Germany with the House of Savoy by a double tie. King Hembolt’s brother, Prince Amadeo, Duke of Costs, who wore the Spanish crown for upward of two years, and who has been a widower since 1867 has just been dethroned to the Bavarian Princess Theresa, a first cousin to King Louis II, of Bavaria. Another cousin, the Frincess Isabella, was only a few weeks ago dethroned at the Castle of Nymphen- burg to Prince Fommaso, Duke of Geneva, a first cousin of the King of Italy. O:
