More survey results

Calculating the totals of your survey answers is no easy matter.

It’s just a few questions, you say?

Notso!

I counted 150 replies with 13 questions each; that is a basic 1950 answers. However you must realize that a number of questions allow for more than one reply.

‘Two good examples of this are question 7 and 10. In question 7, “Do you read the following?” there are ten sections requiring yes or no answer. Question 10, which reads; “Do you do business with the following? is fol- lowed by a list of eight businesses, and many of you circled at least four of the eight.

So, as you can tell, it is not just a simple one question one answer routine. In addition to your answers, I also recorded a DNA (did not answer) for all questit-s you 'did not answer or answered incorrectly.

In all, it is a long slow job, but here are a few of the highlights.

The majority of our readers so far are from Prince Edward Island and are con- centrated in the Arts and

Business faculty.

A strong 55% of , you always read us, compared tc the 25% of you who read us only usually.

Sports is the ﬁrst section read with 32%, followed closely by News at 27% and the Student Union news at l8°/o.

On the question of giving space to clubs and societies, you ‘were evenly divided on the issue of whether to impose limits on what they wrote. However you did agree that they should be given space.

Will View from the Top return? That remains to be seen.

As to where you spend some of your hard earned dollars, the Panther Lounge ranked a close first, followed by GJ’s, the Tradewinds and Mr. K’s.

And finally, to the ques— tion of what you would like to see more of, a clear 50% said humour, while 35% wanted more feature articles and 30% hoped for more mste tries.

So that is it to date, over the March Break I hope to get many more, or all, of the survey results recorded. And we will let you know what we ﬁnd. Till, then, I wish you all a great break — and people, don’t work too hard!

Dear Editor,

Allow me to compliment you on your recent editorial about secrecy within the Student Union administra— tion.

It seems that once elected, councillors lose all feeling of responsibility to their con- stituents.

That fact that decisions are often made under conditions of secrecy, and usually with- out any gauging of students’ opinions, suggest to me that you are not incorrect in using such terms as ‘paranoia’ and ‘exclusivity’.

Moreover, the secrecy which surrounds the alloca- tion of money within the S.U. (to which all students are required to contribute) is sCandalous and an affront to

democratic principles. Furthermore, the council’s preoccupation with petty

matters of missed meetings and impeachment procedures moves me to apply the term ‘amateurish’ to their methods.

I am expecting that, after thepublishing of this letter,

one or more councillors will take it upon themselves to make a defensive reply.

I would suggest to them, that instead of indulging in pointless rhetoric, they should publish the ﬁnancial documents of the Student Union in the open forum of the Netted Gem.

Woes of an Islander abroad

Dear Editor

Being in the big city of Ottawa going to Carleton University and being a former student of UPEI, I often get questions like — “Is there really a university in PEI?”, “Do you guys have TV there yet?”, or “Can you skate around the Island in the winter time?”

In all seriousness, a lot of people really don’t know too much about the land of the good red mud.

Anyway, there are always comments ﬂying around me about lobsters, potatoes,

ﬁshing, etc.

One day, after class two guys handed me an envelope, claiming that a lobster they had met downstairs had given it to them to give to me.

They said the lobster had “crawled” all the Way from Ch’tOwn just to bring me some news from home and that he was near death’s door.

He was tired and cold and his poor little lobster “paws” were really sore!!!

So I proceeded to open the envelope, and this is what was inside:
