Fall Program Is Underway

The fall physical education program is in full swing in our city schools, We visited Birchwood yesterday to chat with John Kane, physical. education intructor at the Longworth Avenue institute of learning. —

John outlined his program for us and stated that fall activities are being centred around; football, croes country running and golf. ;

There is a six team football league at Birchwood with ap- proximately 115. boys taking part in the competitions. Kane pointed out that these youngsters are put through a 10 day conditioning period before they even see a football. Following the conditioning they spend a week learning the fundamentals hefore the actual season gets underway. .

These players are allotted football gear and John remark- ed that several graduates from the Birchwood system have gone on to star ‘with St. Dunstan's High School's inter- scholastic team and several of them are presently performing with the Red and White Varsity squad. t

Speaking on the cross country running Kene told us this is one of the best conditioners for any type of athlete and that this sport is compulsory for anyone wishing to play football at Birchwood. There are only seven boys on the cross country team that will represent the school in Island competition, but there are approximately 200 youngsters taking the training ses- sons

There has been a tremendous interest in golf on the high .school level in recent years and there are plans heing laid for an Island interscholastic golf tournament. There are 18 players registered at the Longworth Avenue institute and Birchwood has to hold their own elimination tournament at the Rustico Gelf and Yacht Club.

Mr. Kane told this observer he feels Golf should and eventually will bold a prominate place in the list of activities for the physical education of school students.

John stated that the value of golf lies in its carry over value. Golf is a sport which can be played through practically the whole life span of a normal individual; while other sports are usually dropped once the individual leaves his academic chores for a career in business.

Kane said the fundamentals for this sport should be taught when the kids are school age so they will be able to ‘enjoy the sport when they leave school rather than go through the process of learning the came at an older age

The trend ef physical education today is to introduce people to recreational- games which will be useful through- out their adult life and we think golf is an excellent ex- ample of such a sport.

John Kane has been re-hired to handle the coaching duties for the defending champion St. Dunstan’s Varsity hockey team in the Maritime Intercolegiate’ Hockey League. Kane was at the helm last year and led the Red and White ag- @regation to the Dominion college finals. We talked to Kane following the announcement by the executive management of the Malpeque Road University that he would be back at the helm and he told ue he was glad to be back in the fold. We asked if he had anv idea of the strength of thit years team and he said they would certaintly miss Bill MacMillen, but that he thinks they are in pretty fair shape to defend their MTHL championship.
