Panthers start on winning note;

The 1970 edition of the UPEI Panthers football squad was un- veiled at MacAdam Field on Satur- day Sept. 19th, and they didn’t let the home team fans down as they

defeated the Acadia Axemen 29-20.

Coach Palov a lot more work is need ed to polish up theplays. UPEI’s touchdowns were evenly split, two passing and two running.

This game could give a good indic- ation of the season-to come as last weekend the Axemen dropped a close game to St. Mary’s Huskies.

In Saturdays game, there Were no major scores in the first quarter but Panthers took a 1-0 lead on a single off Gary Mancuso’s missed field goal from the thirty.

In the second quarter, the Pan- thers offence began to roll. Their first major score came on an 18 yard pass from quarterback'John Dionisi to Jerry Campbell who was loose in the end zone. Mancuso kicked the convert to make the score 8-0.

The Panther’s second touchdown came following Jim Paolini’s inter- ception of an errant Acadia pass. Paolini returned the ball to the Acadia 20 where Bill Oeheke scored

on al 6 yard run. I‘Manco again con- verted to make score 15-0 in favour of the Panthers.

Then the Axemen began to move as they scored their first touchdown on a 35 yard pass to the flanker, Hills. The convert was good and UPEI led at that time 15-7.

However, the Panthers came back

on a beautiful 80 yard pass and run ‘play from Dionisi to big tight end number 76—Fox Mancuso again con- verted the touchdown.

Before the Half was over, Acadia scored but the convert was blocked.

In the second half the teams tra- ded touchdowns. Panthers final touchdown was scored on an 8 yard run by DickYost in the 3rd quarter.

:Mancuso again converted the touch- down.

In the fourth quarter Acadia scor- ed on a 50 yard pass to his halfback, Rinsone. The touchdown was con—

verted.

The final score of the game was Panthers 29, Acadia Axemen 20.

COACHES COMMENT -—————-

Following the game, we talked with Coach Palov and Coach Mac- Lean.

Question: What did you think about your teams performance to- day?

Palov: We felt we were good enough to win, I know we made some mistakes, but we made the fewer and therefore we got the win. We have a lot of work to do, to pol— ish up our plays.

One big thing is the team played as a unit. The defence played great ball as did the offence. Overall I am

very happy with the performance of the team,

Question: How do you think the team will do this year?

Palov: Providing no injuries and no players going both ways we will surprise a lot of teams.

Question: What did you feel hurt your team most today?

Palov: The inexperience of our rookies and mental lapses at crucial times were the two factors that hurt us most. However, we are in a bui- lding year when most players are freshmen and sophomore, there be- ing only four seniors on the team.

MacLean (Offensive Line Coach)

Question: How did you feel your offensive line played today?

‘ MacLean: I thought offensive line played well, we had good pass protection. We can sharpen up in-

The AIAA tennis tournament is sc- heduled for Dalhousie this year on October 10. As the time for team selection draws near, the hopefuls are participating in keen competit- ion in a ladder toumament. In this type of tournament the play- ers on the lower rungs are given the opportunity of challenging those above them with the winner keep- ing or capturing the higher rung.

Question: What do you think of prospects for the coming year?

MacLean: We have a good team but in this league you never know. We will play the games one at a time so we have six big games left.
