A Produce Shipper’s Fiight.

In August last, an Englishman named C. J. Dewey came to Montreal from Liverpool asa produce shipper to England. He showed letters from the best houses all over England ordering geods, and he got all he wanted. He raised $25,000 from Mulson’s bank on the strength of bills of lading. The draft was? duly honored when presented in Liverpool. His next shipment was on 14th ult., and he got advances from the same bank to the amount of $30,000, -alao on bills of lading. Whether these advances will be met by the shipments is a matter still in doubt, but from other developments there is great fear the bank will stand to lose the whole amount, as it has been dis-

N and after Tuesday, July 24th, the new steamer ‘‘Heather Belle,’ Hugh McLean, master, will run as follows:—

Every Tuesday morning at four o'clock, will leave Charlottetown for Orwell Brush Wharf, leaving Orwell Brush Wharf, at seven a. m., for Charlottetown, calling at China Point and Halliday’s Wharves, leave Charlottetown at 3p. m., for Halli- day’s China Point and rush Wharves, where she will remain over night.

Wednesday, will leave Brush Wharf for Charlottetown, at seven a. m., calling at

same time calculated to rnin and destroy our fisheries altogether after atime. Just so soon as the American seiners made their appearance this year on our coast, the eatch of fish by our boat fishermen began to diminish. It will be so every year too while they are allowed to take fish by such means as seines. It would be a lucky day for our Island fishermen if American fishing vessels were excluded from the three mile limit from this time forward. There is a mine of wealth at our doors if the fisheries could only be kept for our own people ; but if Americans are to be admitted after 1875 to the three mile limit they should pay handsomely for the privilege and then only be allowed to fish under certain restrictions a the appliances used in taking the sh. Sturgeon Notes.

On the 30th ult., the new Church was dedicated for Divine Worship. Though a very wet day a good number of friends assembled at half-past ten to hear the Rev. E. Bell, and again at half-past two Rev. W. Wan, and at seven o'clock, the Rev. E. Bayne. The discourses were good and the collections excellent. This is the first Church given to the United Church. The friends are to be praised for their energy and zeal in the erection of such a neat and handsome building, and-the best of all to be opened nearly free of debt.

~~<—>. Temperance at Ciyde River.

Pursuant to notice, a public temperance meeting was held in the Church at Clyde River on Wednesday, the 26th ultimo. Db. W. Henderson, Esq., occupied the chair;§who,and in a few well chosen words, stated the object for which the meeting was called. Dr. Henderson, by request, ad- dressed the meeting on ‘‘the effects of alcohol on the system in sickness and health.” The learned Dr. proved con- clusively by quoting from different eminent physicians that alcohol used in health was injurious no matter how moderately taken, while in a few cases of disease only, it would effect a cure.

Scottish females excelin humor. Banter is their forte. Campbell, the Laird of Combie, on Loch Awe, met at dinner Miss Macnab, of Baro-chastail. The former was notorious for his licentiousness, the latter remarkable for her plain features. “Come,” said Campbell, looking across the table to Miss Macnab, “I’il give you a toast, ‘Honest men and bonnie lasses.” “With all my heart,” answered the lady, ‘for it neither applies to you nor me.”

A colonel of a volunteer cavalry regiment, complaining of the inefficiency of his officers: remarked that the duties of the corps de- volved solely upon himself. ‘‘I am,’ said he ‘‘my own captain, my own lieutenant, my own cornet-——”. ‘‘And your own trum- peter too,” added a gentlewoman.

When the late Mr. Erskine Wemyss, of Wemyss Castle, contested with Lord Loughborough the representation of Fife- shire, he was aided in his canvass by his wife,a lady of great tact. When Mrs. Wemyss was waiting neara pit-shaft till one of the underviewers came up, a youth of twenty, discovering that the lady’s hair was red, whispered to his companion, ‘‘She wud set a body a-lowe” (on fire), Over- hearing the remark, Mrs. Wemyss turned to the offender and said, ‘‘Don’t fear, my lad, you’re too green to burn.”

An Edinburgh lady was, by a gentleman whom she had not fora long time met, complimented on so well withstanding the pressure of years. ‘‘My wife, I know, is just your age, Miss M——,” said the gentleman, ‘‘and while your hair is quite dark, hers has become grey.”” ‘‘No doubt,” replied the lady, *‘mine had been so too if I had been your wife.”

Jane, Duchess of Gordon,was uncommon- ly smart in wit and humour, more especial- iy repartee, but she was overcome hy William Pitt. Talking to the great states- man in London about the city of Paris, she complained of the difficulty of getting on there without fully understanding the language. The Duchess made the remark with her wonted Scotch accent. Pitt said with a smile, “‘l hope your Grace does not suffer from that inconvenience here.”
