MlLITARY BOOTS FOR MILITARY COSTUMES

The sensation of the spring in foot- wear is the new military boot for wear with short, flare-skirted military tuil- learn and frocks. A natty regimental affair indeed is this spring boot, with trim, slender lines of toe and heel, a top of light colored cloth, rather high because the new skirt is so short. and with from fourteen to eighteen brass buttons with eagle or anchor and some with a swinging tassel to add to the martial effect. Some of these mili- tary boots are very fanciful; for in- stance a boot with vamp of dull blue morocco and top of buff cloth trimmed with braid and fastening straight down the outer side of the leg with eagle brass buttons in guitar effect. More censor-votive is another military boot which has a. brass-buttoned top of gray suede and toe, heel-faxing and strap trimming up the front of patent leather stitched in white, A dainty military boot of white duck with a piping of red soutache edging the button stay. and eighteen small brass buttons making a gay contrast along- side the red piping, For children, a fetching little military boot of patent with brass-buttoned red top cuffed at the top with the patent leather and sporting the military gold tassel.

These rather sensational millltary boots are of course only for the young or women who can successfully carry off ultra styles. The boot of accepted correctness for spring wear with street costumes of tailored style, is the beautifully shaped buttoned boot with long. tapering lines of aristocra- tic suggestion. a rather high curved heel, and a top of cloth in one of the fashionable neutral shades. The daint- est of these boots are in gaitor effect. a narrow, gracefully curved vamp of the patent or dull black leather used for the faxing running up above the heel and giving the. light cloth top, at a little distance. the effect of a gutter neatly strapped over the foot. Actual gaiters are also worn with patent leather pumps. but the strapped-on gaiter never has the exquisitely smooth fit over instep and ankle which makes the buttoned gsiter hoot so elegant. Laced' boots have been worn during the winter and will be worn some dur- ing the spring with tops of light clotlt in the goiter effect, but the laced shoe is an inconsistency which the well dressed woman has refused to accept as a novelty, and the boot that com- plies with the requirements of good form is of the buttoned type.

BLACK AND WHITE FOOTWEAR A SPRING FAD

White boots and pumps picked out with black trimmings are smarter this season than all-white footwear—unless the costume , is one that demands snowy whiteness throughout. En- chantineg pretty are some new pumps of white kid with fine lines of black outlining the cuer of the vamp, a col— lur around tho. top. and the narrow straps which cross a short, curved tongue. One button. in black jet. gold or colors. placed just. at the throat of a new pump strap gives utmost style to these little slipper-pumps and satis- fies the fad for buttons on footwear this season. Black pumps of dull kid, in similar style, have plpings of white kid and a white button. Pumps are only slightly removed from slippers in character now. Their lines are exceed— ingly dainty; they are cut low, like a slipper, with high. curved heel and it turned or very light welted sole,and the Colonial tongue. which has al- most disappeared. is as tiny as a slip- per tongue can be and show itself at
