On Tuesday October 17 in Washington D.C., Patrick Roy of the Colorado Avalanche did the inevitable by picking up his 448th NHL victory in a 4-3 overtime win against the Washington Capitals.

With the win, Roy sur- passed Hall of Fame and Detroit Red Wing legend Terry Sawchuk to become the most winningest goal- tender in NHL history. Roy picked up the victory in his 847th career game which was ahead of Sawchuk’s pace 968 games before reaching 447 victories.

Also: with the win, Roy kept his personal unbeaten streak alive which goes back to last sea- son and kept the Avalanche out of the loss column for this season.

Following the game, Roy was hoisted on the shoulders of teammates Adam Foote and Ray Bourque and paraded around the ice surface of the MCI Center to the applause of the Washington crowd. Even Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretién acknowl- edged Roy’s record-breaking night.

“T want to congratulate you on your exceptional achievement,” said Chretien with a phone call he made to Roy during the post game media conference.

With the record in the

books there has been much specu- lation about what the 35-year old goaltender will do next. Roy has been contemplating retirement for the past few seasons but hasn’t given a straight answer to what his

future plans are. The three-time Stanley Cup champion would cer- tainly like to add another ring to his collection, which he expressed after the game.

“To me, the thing that I always play for is the Stanley Cup,” said Roy after the game.

With his team playing so well thus far they are a definite contender. Colorado was the last unbeaten team in the league going into the final week of October with a record of 9-0-2-0.

of Fame career. The next record which Roy is left to break is that of career shutouts. He currently has 48 while the man he must catch has 103, Terry Sawchuk.

After celebrating a great week of achievement individually and teamwise, Roy was arrested at his home in Littleton, Colorado on Sunday October 22nd after a domestic dispute with his wife Michele.

Greenwood Village police received a 911 call from the Roy residence from Michele Piuze although she hung up quickly and did not speak. The police report

said that Roy admitted to pulling a bedroom door off its hinges and damaging another after he and his wife got into an argument.

Roy was charged with mis- demeanor criminal mischief which occurred during an act of domestic violence. He was released on $750 bail. Roy goes to trial in November and faces the possibility of one year in jail with a $1000 fine or possible deportation home to Canada if convicted because he does not have official citizenship in the United States.

Roy was issued a restrain- ing order on alcohol and illegal drugs use which is mandatory in domestic dispute cases. He was permitted to return home with his family and travel with the Avalanche on out-of-state games.

In a small press conference on the Monday after the incident

‘Roy expressed his feelings of the

previous evening.

“Obviously, this is creating a distraction, and my wish is that this distraction will be over soon. I am thankful for the support I am getting from my family and every one of my teammates.”

Teammate Ray Bourque expressed the club’s position on Roy’s difficulties.

“We’ve always __ stuck together and we’ll stick by Patrick. We know he is a quality person and a great family man.”
