Excitement briefly filled the air at Cadre headquarters when it was dis- covered that the stapler was function- ing properly. The discovery was made after a search of the various debris scattering the Cadre office yielded said stapler. Staffer Jeff Coll exuber- antly remarked , “something actually works here! We should write a story on that.”

UPEI Teams Have Tough Weekend

UPEI’s athletic teams had a rough weekend, losing four out of five games in hockey, basketball, and vol- leyball. The lone win came by way of the hockey Panthers on Saturday night. Here is a rundown of the scores and highlights.

In women’s volleyball, the Panthers lost three straight games to the Saint Mary’s Huskies, which dropped the Panthers to 1-9 on the season and last in the AUS standings. The loss was the seventh straight for the women’s team, who will look to rebound Saturday against Cape Breton and Sunday against Acadia. Both games will be played at home at the Sports Centre.

In men’s basketball, the St. F.X. X-Men defeated the Panthers on Sunday, with a final score of 92-79. Six X-Men players reached double figures and as St.F.X. out-rebounded the Panthers 46-36. The X-Men hit 49 percent of their shots from the field and went 23 for 34 from the free- throw line. The Panthers shot 43 per cent from the field and went 11 for 21 from the free-throw line.

Jonathan McKercher went seven for 12 from the field and was five of six at the line, leading the Panthers with 20 points. Tyler Wood and Chris Howell each added 12 points for the Panthers.

The loss was the third straight for the Panthers, dropping them to 4-4 on the season. They will return home on Friday night to play Acadia, and Saturday night they will play host to Saint Mary’s.

In women’s action, the X- Women overcame a six-point deficit to defeat UPEI 78-66. The Panthers’

offence was shut down in the second half, scoring just 17 points. Kate Myron led the Panthers with 22 points, while Katherine Walters added 11 and Katie Andrews added 10. UPEI shot 34 percent from the field going 19 for 56 and 23 for 30 from the line. St. FX. went 35 for 76 from the field.

With its third loss in a row, the Panthers dropped to 3-5 on the season. The Panthers return home on Friday night to play Acadia and Saint Mary’s on Saturday.

In men’s hockey on Saturday night, the Panthers, led by goaltender Jason Flick’s 40 saves, enjoyed a 3-1 victory over the UNB Varsity Reds in AUS hockey action at the Aitken Centre in Fredericton

Flick was busy, making 17 saves in the second and 16 more in the third period. The Panthers were out- shot 41-26. With the victory, the Panthers improved to 6-9-3-0 on the season, coming within a single point of sixth place and the final playoff spot occupied by Acadia.

Goalscorers for the Panthers were Aaron MacInnis, Adam Rivet, and Darcy Harris. Kyle Werner was the lone scorer for the Varsity Reds. With the loss, the V-Reds dropped to 10-7-3-0 to sit in fourth place.

The Panthers were successful in killing off eight powerplay opportu- nities by UNB, and went one for four on their own powerplay.

The Panthers, who dropped a 6-5 decision to Moncton on Friday, return home on Wednesday to play the St. FX X-Men at the Civic Centre and play at Dalhousie on Saturday.
