Thatit is advisable to introduce a bill having for its object the regulation of the sale of intoxicating liquors in the City of Charlottetown, and so to preserve therein public decency and repress drunkeness and disorderly conduct. ;

It is a well known fact that previous to the time tbat Mr. Peters assumed contro! of the Geveromen',the ferry boats were run under Inspection. But he (able lawyer that he is) found that as these boats belonged te the Queen the Dominion Government could not compel ao in-pection; and for ~ome reason best known to themselves he and his colleagues assumed the grave res- ponsibility of taking the lives ef the travelling public in their own hands.
Now, Sir, the smallest steamer in the harbor cannot leave ber berth without being inspected annually by two officials of Dominion Government, baving their cer« tificates posted up in a public place in the boat. Even the Ex-Premier’s lodster yacht “T. A. Stewart” cannot move without being provided with said certificate. Still, he thinks the “Elfin” quite safe enough without one, to carry bis constituents to and from the City to Rocky Point! But he appears more anxious and zealous in obstructing City bills than in protecting the lives of the travelling public.
It has been currently reported that a ho'e was blown in thie boats boiler when st-am was got up to etart her this spring; and if such a etate of danger exisis it is time for passengers to take warning.
We understand that the “Hillsboro” was inepected last year and is now running under Dominion inspection. But the people in that section of the conntry who travel by her have some one to look after their interests and see that their lives are not in endaogered. It is many years ago when the thea Inspecter of Hulls, Mr. Coker, refueed to grant the Elfia a certifi- cate to allow ser to cross the mouth of the harbour to Rocky Point; but perhaps our rulers now think (thet like old wine) she improves by age. Sir,—The Guardian this morning both editorially and otherwise “roasts” one of toe mewbers of the Provincial Legislature because he hud the temerity (7?) to speak outin our Legislative Halle. It ie about time for the people of this town and of thia Province to know whether they elect members to Parliament to represent them or to do the bidding of acertain number of the citizens of Charlottetown. Has it come to this pass when members elected by the representative vole ofa Province must etoop to receive and take orders from a “click” as to what laws thoy shalland shall not make. Of these thirty-one tried for the degree of master of arts, but’ only thirteen were successful. Tuesday evening of Rev. A. W. McLeod, Ph. D., and sympathise with Mrs. McLeod who is a daughter of William Mutch, Esq, of Hopeton, and the other relatives of the deceased. Dr. McLeod was ordained to the ministry ofthe Presbyterian church on September 11th 1878. He had been unable to preach for nearly a year, owing to pal- monary complaints, and his death, though not unexpected came sooner than was anticipated. His funeral will take place tomorrow.
