Amending Election Laws. THE TARTE-McGRERVY CASE

Yes'erday Sir John Thompson explained the four bills introduced by him, amending the election laws, They provide among other things that the time for revision is extend- ed to 15th August, without extending the time when the list is to be finally revised. All election petitions shall be tried by two judges, instead of one, and petitions ayainst the return of members shall bs made not later than thirty days after declaration of return, They also extend exemption as to liability of candidates for acts committed against their will and orders by agents, and provide alwo that the election shall not be voided if by agents only, and not by candi- dates, but without candidates’ sanction or connivance trivial offencos have been com- mitted.

in the Tarte-McGreevy inveatigation McGreevy gave testimony to the effect that he had never paid any money, or authoriz- ed, or knew of its payment to Sir Hector Langevin or his son, or any official of the Public Works Department. Robert Me- Greevy refused to produce his private bank books, diary and memorandum before the Committee. This is very significant, con- sidering that the Connolly’s produced every- thing that was asked of them.

In. the Public Accounts Investigation Committee the Finance Minister contra- dicted the statements of Palmer, the dis- missed clerk who made revelations regard- ing the Interior Department. Other clerks contradicted him also.

Deputy Minister Burgess read a lengthy explanation to the committee, showing the great accumulation of work which he ha‘ referred to, and which had to be performed by experienced men after hours; that it was so performed faithfully, and the Gov- ernment were at no loss, although an irregu- larity was committed.

Perira, Assistant Secretary of the De- partment, testified to receiving money fer extra work in a@ fictitious name. He has been suspended.

The Ottawa liar has been busy lately if he has informed the Patriot that Senecal, the superintendent of printing bureau, and Hail, secretary of the Interior Department, are both missing. Both reports are false. While irregularities have evidently taken place, there is no proof of fraud upon the Govern- ment, and the sensation consequent upon the first revelations has completely passed away.

Irish Election.

Dus1in, July 17. Kenny, member for South Cork, has re- signed, and Parne)! will have to fight that constituency. It is generally believed that he will be beaten. Parnell is now engaged preparing a defence and giving facts of the O’Shea case. In this way he proposes to revenge himself on Gladstone by publishing

a large amount of secret correspondence.

Fishery Bulletin.

(Fisheries Intelligence Bureau Report.)

Hairax, July 17.—The fisheries are re- ported dull in all branches. On the shores of Anticosti codfish are reported very plen- tiful off English Bay, but will not take hooks. The cod and herring fisheries are reported poor at south coast of Quebec, ex- cepting at Grand River, where the cod is good and the herring fair, At Point Es- cuminac the cod and salmon fisheries are fair, and mackerel are taking hooks quite freely. The mackerel fishery is reported good at Miminigash, Pr... & Island, some boats with four men each having as many as four thousand per boat and fair catehes by hook and nets are being made all along the coast round to Alberton. In Cape Sreton the fisheries are exceedingly dull owing to unfavorable weather. Squid are beginning to appear on the north coast in the vicinity of Antigonish. Fishing of all kinds alzo very poor in Nova Scotia, Fair catches of cod and herring reported at Locke- port, N.S, but no other reports worthy of mention,

Wuatcom, Wash., July 14.— Citizen George Francis Train arrived here to- day, the end of his jonrney. He is in high spirits over beating his former record and circling the globe in 62 days.

Josnua, Texas, July 15.—A most fiend- ish murder was done here yesterday morn- ing. George Newbery had $500 in his house and went away visiting. Two men at 1 o'clock gained admittance, and failing to get the money, murdered Newhery’s old mother, his two little girls and baby boy. Several hours later the neighbors discover- the victims corpses and organized a pursuit. Lynching is probable.

Sorta, July 15.—Constantine Baltcheff, Bulgarian minister of finance, was murder- ed in this city on March 27 last. To-day two students were arrested in this city upon suspicion of being concerned in the mur- der. The students confessed that they we ‘e the actual murderers, and accused Dr. Tzatcheff, Dr. Moloff and Col. Kissoff of having hired them to commit the deed. The three last named persons were arrest-

ed to-day.
