Canned music was all very well, but; there were no exquisite gradations of tone in it. In Hansel and Gretel at. times the tine tone playing of the leader made itself felt, but the invalid slept through most of this.

Oddly enough he no longer felt tired. He did not want to go to bed. For the first time in days he felt better, so much better that ha smoked a cigar and relished it, for the tobacco no longer tasted, foul. Some flue brandy completed the cure and at half-past eleven he rang up Max Maurice and wee for- tunate in finding him at his flat. The ou- ductor had just. vnished his supper.
