Brig. Nicholson was in command of 3,000 British and 800 French troops who defended Calais for five days against four divisions of Nazi troops attempting to drive through to Dunkerque. Only 4'1 of the 3,800 men escaped. -

A brief communique from advanced head- quarters said the landings were preceded by all attack while naval forces escorted the ground troops and bombarded the coast defences during
