Both millet and Hungarian grass should be grown on land that has been Sow about twelve quarts per acre, and brush it in. If the soil is rich, and the young plants make an early start, they will grow with astonishing rapidity, and need no other labor but that of mowing and curing. With mlil- let the mistake is sometimes made of eutting the crop too late. The proper time is when the seed heads begin to form. If delay then occurs there will be too much indigestible fibre in the hay. It is, therefore, better to cut a little too soon rather than too late. The German giant millet is the variety most- ly preferred. The seed should be even- ly broadcasted, and sown just before a rain on light soils that bake, but the ground should be freshly harrowed be- fore seeding. A crop of millet will prove an excellent addition to the hay crop that may be short or neglected.

Crimson Cleover—Celery Grewing—Potate Culture.

Those who have crops of crimson (scarlet) clover to plow under will find that the clover will make very rapid growth during the next three weeks

if it is desired to grow another green crop right efter it. In such case the Southern cow pea will be found excel- lent, and the vines should be plowed under just as the seed pods are begin- ning to form When plowing under green crops apply about twenty bushels of lime’or wood aches per acre.

Any person who grows celery. can easily produce large and white stalks, but the main point is to have them crisp. Good celery should break into twe or three pieces when bent, and should be very brittle. The way to se- cure the brittleness is to begin blanch- ing the stalks from the start, and also grow them rapidly. If the blanching is done later in the season, as is usually the the stalks will be white and attractive, but will not be

Farmers who procure pure breeds of fowls cannot resist the temptation to cross the breeds. This system al- ways leads to deterioration of stock. When one begins to cross several breeds, either of animals or poultry, the result in a few years is a lot of mongrels. It is well to grade up the common stock, but pure breeds should never be crossed. All the best crosses were made when the breed was produc- ed.

Beef cattle can be made to pay on some farms even when they give no profit on others. If by keeping of any Kind of stock the farmer can suc- ceed in utilizing portions of his foods which are unsalable he will gain that which otherwise would be lost. The pro- fit on a farm often comes from the saving of substances through the me- dium of. other channels. A pound of beef solid may represent more than the original value of the foods which produced it, and portions of the foods may be of straw, corn fodder anj other bulky materials, which are not readily soid. : es
