James Robert Ainsworth. above, son of Mr. and Mrs. V. A. Ains- worth of Charlottetown has been selected by the local Rotary Club to attend the project "An advent- ure in citizenship" which takes place in Ottawa May 4-7 inclusive under the auspices of the Rotary Club of that city. The selection of Mr. Ain-sworth marks the first time the Charlottetown Rotary Club has been represented at such an assembly, which the Ottawa club has been sponsoring for the past three years. '

MEMBERS ENTERTAINED -- Members of the Legislature last nigl' enjoyed an excellent dinner when they were guests at the Vo- cational School shortly after the adjournment hour. The dinner ex- cellently planned and prepared was buffet style with Dr. L. W. Shaw, Deputy Minister of Education. carving and women of the staff pouring tea and coffee. There were approximately 40 guests and seat- ed together and obviously enjoying the companionship were Premier J. Walter Jones and Dr. W. J. P. Maclvlilian.

POLICE COURT-In the city police court yesterday morning before Magistrate K. M. Martin. a resident. of Murray River found guilty of operating a motor vehicle while his faculties were impaired with alcohol was fined 5100 and costs. Two vagrants were sentenced to 60 days each. two drunk and incapable cases were fined 35 and costs or 5 days and a third was fined S20 and costs or 20 days. Two other drunk and lncapabies were remanded until this morning.

COUNTY COURT - There are eight oasmz before the County Court of Queen's County which commenced its March sittings in Charlottetown yesterday. Judge C. St. Clair Trainor presiding. One case was heard. that of Henry Mc- Guirk. Fort Augustus, plaintiff vs. Norris Kitson and Heath Crosby, both of Charlottetown, defendants It is a. claim for damages arising out of a collision in January at the corner of Fsiier and Euston

Streets in Charlottetown. It was taken under consideration. Mr. L. P. O'Donnell is counsel for the

plaintiff. Mr. C. H. McQuaid for the defendants.

Y. P. S. MEETING-The regular meeting of the Central Christian Young People's society was held in the Church Hall, under the direction of the president, Miss June Moore. An enriching study upon the subject "You and Your Money" was led by Miss Jean Beck. It was pointed out that Christian stewardship has an in- tegral part in the entire fabric of Christian character. The pianist for the evening was Wendall Stev- enson. Plans were made for the forthcoming social to be held next week. The benediction was pro- nounced by the minister, M. D. Dunbar. '

ZION Y.P.S. MEETS The regular weekly meeting of the Zion Young People's society was held last evening. The devotional period was led by Kay Garnhum and Marlene Balderston. Farewell gifts were given by the Young People to the minister, Rev, G.C. Web- sta and Mrs. Webster who are leaving on March Inst for Ontario where Rev. Mr. Webster has ac- cepted a. charge. The study entitled "Why do we believe in a Triune God?" was led by Connin Cooke. Plans were made for a crokinole party which is to be held next week. Following games, the meet-

C.D.A., the young people of Trinity United Church last evening prescribed the second of two per- formances of "The Fires of Bpring." a delightful romantic comedy. I-Ieartz Hall was filled to overflow- ing by an audience which thoroug'h- ly enjoyed every moment of the sparkling entertainment.

Gladys MacM.illan, who is well knovm to those who have attended previous productions by Trinity Young People, as usual gave a fine performance, in the role of Julia Mathis. a widow. while her teen- age children. Sonny and Plnky, were excellently portrayed by Char- lie Frizzell and Edith Brown. Oth- ers in the "clique" to which these 'two belonged were Alex I-Ieffner. a boy from next door. played by Da- vid MacDonald: Flo I-Ieffner, his sister. Helen Chivpvpell; Midge and Madge Vernon, two young singers, Wilma and Janet Wood.

Mrs. Mast.his' two suitors were a not very congenial banker, whose role was capablv played by Ian MacLean. and Barry Tremont. a famous orchestra leader. who turns out to be the answer to evervone's problems, and who was portrayed by Leith Thompson.

Others in the cast were Ingrid. a hired girl, Donna Borwness: Herb Farnham, a young lady killer and also 'the banker's son, played by Brenton Partridge: a little nuis- ance, Mary Jane I-Ieffner. in whose role Doris Andrew gave a most- convincing performance. and Rob- ert Crooks was cast in the role of a young pianist.

"In some ways I am a wealthy man; not through money in the bank. but I have another treasure. My memories and my friendships,' Dr. W. J. P. MacMillan said in the Legislature yesterday when he was given an ovation on the occasion of his 72nd birthday celebration.

It started with Mr. Joseph Liv- ingstone, senior messenger. cross- ing the floor to place a large bou- quet of red roses on the Doctor's desk. At the same time the newly installed recording machine was heard playing back a specially made recording of "Happy Birth- day Dear Doctor", a. song earlier into the machine by a group of Luislative employees.

A short paper on the life of Schyler Coi- fax, the founder of the Rebekah Dc-greclol Oddfellowship was read by Mrs. Peggy Dennis, P.N.G. Mrs. Edith Davison gave a hum- orous reading. This was followed by a vocal solo by Miss Junc Fostcr which was warmly ap- plauded. Finally a very enjoyable playettc, "Classroom Days" was presented by Mrs. Margaret Mac- Kinnun, Mrs. Eva MacMlilan, Mrs. Gwen Warren. Mrs. Adelaide Moore. Miss Myrtle White, Mrs. Lois Brown. As an encore the chorus sang a charming Scottish folk song entitled "The Wee Coop- er O'Fyfe." The chorus was dir- ected by Mrs. Keith Rogers, organ- ist. of Trinity United Church.

At the conclusion of the perfor- mance. Charles Walper, president of Trinity Y. P.U.. on behalf of all the members, thanked Mrs. I-loule for her untlrinig efforts to make the play the tremendous success it was, and site was presented with a bouquet of red roses from the Young People.

Mrs. I-loule's decision to retire from the field of dramatlcs is deep- ly regretted by all who have had the, pleasure of attending her pro- ductions. and last evening's per- formance wns a great tribute to her skill in directing fine dramatic programs in which young people have a part.

CYITAWA, Mar. 2:! - A veteran artillery officer from Charlotte- town, P. E. 1.. Maj. J. P. Beer, 33, (above), left Camp Petawawa last Sunday on route for Korea. He is second-in-command of the 81st Field Regiment, RCA. that will be joining the 25th Infantry Brigade in the Far East within the next few weeks.

Maj. Beer, (ll0 Edward Street), was born in Charlottetown and educated at Prince of wales Col- He began his military career with the Non-Permanent Active Militia in 196'! with a. Charlottetown unit of the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals.

In was he transferred to a Royal Canadian Artillery unit in that city and has been an Artillery officer ever since. From 1926 until 1940 he served with the 8th Med-

ed with the Royal Canadian Ar- tillery Training Ccntre at Kingston and Camp Petawawa, going over- seas in July of that year. Shortly after arriving in the United King- dom he served with the 1st Field Regiment, RCHA, and the 11th Army Field Regiment.

From 1942 he sei-v8rl with the 12th and 14th Field Regiment, RCA, serving in France, Belgium. Holland and Germany.

He returned to Canada in late 194.5 and has remained in the Per- manent Force ever since. In 1946 he was selected to attend the Long Gunnery Staff Course in the Unit- ed Kingdom. Upon completion of that course he was made a Gener- al Staff Officer with the Director- ate of Artillery at Army Head- quarters, Ottawa.

He was appointed as second-in- command of the 81st Field Regi- ment, RC-A, in November. 1952.

Lively Discussion On. Killing Plant Problem

Committee Work in legislature

Another session of solid work in the Legislature ymterday saw four bills receive third and final read- ing and eight more in the commit- tee stage of second reading.

Those passing yesterday were amendments to the Insurance Act, the City of C-harlottetown Incor- poratlon Act, the Summerside In- corporation Act and An Act; to Authorize the Issue of Debentures by this city for the Commission- ers of Sewers and Water Supply.

In committee yesterday were amcndmeiiits to the P. E. I. Corpo- ration Incomc Tax Act, the Legal Profession Act, the Fire Prevention Act, the Workmen's Compensation Act, the Village Service Act and the Mic-thers' Allowance Act. The two latter -will be further rii " with the committee reporting pro- gress in their deliberations yester- day. Also receiving second read- ing was the Civil Service Act.

Among the committee chairmen yesterday were Messrs. F. L. Mac- Nutt, J. W. D. Campbell. J.G. Mac- Kay, William Acorn, George Kit- son, E. P. Foley and Dr. Lornc Bonnell.

Federation of Agriculture and others interested in the report of the Custom Kill- ing Plant committee heard the whole matter discussed in detail at a meeting in the Clover Club last night, presided over by Mr. Roland MacDonald, the Federation presi- dent.

A resolution that "the matter be left in the hands of the commit- tee to.con-tinue work under the supervision of the board of direct- ors", brought the session to a close at midnight.

The report, which was submitted and moved for adoption by- the cliairmian of the committee, Mr. Andrew Stevenson, and, seconded Mr. Louis MacDonald, brought to light many details as to cost of construction of the partly con- structed Wheatley plant, and the sum required to complete the same should it be deemed expedient by the farmers to purchase shares at 325 per share and own and operate the same,

In his opening remarks Presi- dent MacDonald stated, with re- gard to a recent meeting of the committee with the Government: "1 was only there as an observer and had no authority to represent my Directors. If I am blamed for throwing cold water on the meet- ing. I was just making my position clear". -
