Islanders In

Leo Lanloul-eux's Islanders kept their nose above the second place water line here last night as they came out on the long end of n02-1 score against the Sydney Million- ulrcs in a game which produced little in the way of action or hoc- key.

Bob Gray's goal with eight min- utes left in the third period provel to be the winning counter and thin along with the snappy goaltendlng of Ray Frederick was one of the low redeeming features of the dull contest. ,

For over two and a half periods illc teams waltzed through their motions on the ice. taking an oc- casional time-out to toss a good pass or make an inoffensive rush. Must of the action consisted in throwing the pllck into the corner from near the centre line.

Play opened up following Gray's goal as the Millionaires abandoned their defensive style of play and lattcmpted to get back in the game. Gray received a tripping penalty less than a minute after he scored and the Millionaires showed power on their pressure attacks.

Only the brilliant work of Ray Frederick riul-int! the next two min- ulcs prevented the Moneymen from salvaging at least a draw. Three times he kicked ollt blazing drives as he and his team-mates kept the enemy at bar.

The teams played through a scoreless first period and half way through the second before a goal was scored. Phil Vltale was the marksman as he drilled a screen- crl shot. past Hicks from two feet inside the bluelinc, Willie Marshall.

The Teams played through a poor walrm-up session with each squad missing one golden scoring opportunity. "Red" Favero fanned on ll goal mouth pass from Pllwlyshyn and two minute: later Balhgllte missed after being set up by Dunc Muclntyre.

Except for the two goals the second period was a repetition of the first. The Millionaires fined 12 shots at Frederick. many of them fairly long. while 1-licks handled only five in his end of the rink.

"Buck" Whitlock s e t up "Skippy" Frezcll with a good pass but the hard working newcomer failed to beat Hicks. Shortly be- fore the period ended Beaudry centered in pass off the hack- bourds to "Buck" but Whitluck failed to knock it into the open not.

Neither goalie handled a shot during the first five minutes of the tlllrd period until Pawlyshyn rifled a 80 footer at Hicks. Soc- onds later Frederick pulled off the save that probably meant the game as he made a diving block off little Alex Birukow.- Rohmer and Birukow broke away with only one man to beat and Rohmcr sent his ct-ntreman into the clear.

The Marshall line was the Is- lllndcrs best attacking unit. as they showed spurts of aggressive hockey. ”Skippy" Frezell, who made his first appearance here. played a hard game, back checked well and stood out for his spirit- ed typo of play.

U. S. Permits Baseball Ticllel Ceiling Increase

WASHINGTON. Jan. 22-(AP)- Baseball got a cost of living price increase today-specific boost: in ticket ceiling prices for six big league clubs and 8 per cent for all the minors.

The Office of Price Stabiliz- ation said the mlljor league out- fits affected by the order are clubs which have not raised the tariffs in recent years. The raises were granted to cover cost in- creases pay. travelling expenses and park maintenance.

The increases range up to rl top of 50 cents zl seat, granted to the two Chicago teams on both reserved and box seats. For both the Cubs and the White Sox that would permit ll box seat charge of 52.50 and II reserved seat rate of 32.00. Their general admission: could go up 25 cents to 31.50.

As a mutter of fact he lmd the first shot on the opposing nct. Early in the third period he "dekcd" Bill Dinning on a rush uround the Mills defense and looked pretty good in doing it. He had one fair- ly good scoring opportunity but shot at the covered short side.
