Scientific discovery or reform of any kind has invairably been met with protests and cries of indignation from the strongholds of fanaticism. In- dulgence in abusive language, however, Is after all, a quite harmless occupation for the class of persons who enjoy that sort o! past me, As youare aware Sir, the Dominion Government has appointed an inspector of stock for this§province, with the view of letecting and stamping out tubercolosis from among our cattle. So far about five hundred official tests have been made, and sixteen animals found diseased. Ii must he borne in mind, however, that these herds were tested because the disease was evident by clinical aymptomes, and by no means indicates in ary way what pro- portion of cattle are affected on the Island. Yet it clearly points to the necessity for active measures being still further prose- cuted in the effort to rid our herds of this plague. But itis not sufficient to destroy our diseased stock. We must have some means by which we can keep diseased You cannot stop a stream by damning it up. Stop the source and the stream willdry up. So it is with tubercolosis and other contageous diseases among stock. Destroy he disease at home and keep outside diseased stock from coming in and our herds will soon be free from con- togious disease. When people understand that quarantine means protection to life aud property, they will demand that none but healthy animals enterthe province. To this end an act has been passed at the last session of our local legislature which, ifenforced, will be of great benefit to the Island as a whole. Men as unreasonable as “Stockmen,” who who seems to care little whether our stock is healthy or dis- eased, tel] us that this kind of legislation will ruin their business But ask the farmers and dairymen whotake pride in their profession and who are interested in the growth and developement of our beautiful Island and I thiok you wil! find them almost to a man interested in this subject, and not only willing, but anxious to do everything possible to stamp out this disease and thereby give protection to our people and property. But th-re ie another side to the question that touches every farmer. We must have an _ increasing and steady market for our products. The English market has been mainly supplied by the dairy interes!s of Northern Europe. where tuberculosis exists to a much greater extent than here. Now it is an acknowledged ged fact that butter made from tubercolosis milk wil] contain the bacilli. This being the case, as long as we export butter contain- ing these germs we cannot expect to excel in the markete of the world. But stamp out tubercolosis in the island and then stamp on every case of butter and cherse that we ship “Guaranteed free from pathogeric germs.” Make the letters“ P. E.1,” upon every box,stand for “ purity,” and the demand will be sogreat that the dairy iterests of the provioce will be doublede
