Observe how difficult East's position would have been if he had not been pretty sure that West could win a trump trick and thereby prevent dummy from twice getting the lead. With only ohe entry in dummy, East's refusal to cover the heart jack was eminent- ly- correct, but if East had felt that dummy could get in twice. in trumps. his proper play would be to cover the heart jack, in the hope that West had some heart combination that would produce two tricks. It is unfortunately true that; hesitation! (which are often iumvoldable) do make many pro- blems much easier to solve!
