A Vienna despatch says :—The projected journey of the Crown Prince of Germany causes uneasiness here. It is not forgotten that a Spanish quarrel led to the war of 1870. It is feared that King Alfonso has not enough hold upon his people to secure the German Crown Prince against insult, which would upset the work of years, and terminate all assurances of peace.

The Minister of Militia, the Speaker of the House of Commons, and Major-General Laurie, are spoken of in connection with the presidency of the Dominion Rifle Asso- ciation, vacant by the resignation of Col. Gzowski.

In the Eastern townships a new cloth factory is being established. in Toronto a felt hat manufacturing company has just been incorporated. In Kingston they are commencing to make oileloths. In Winni- peg an agricultural implement factory is to be opened. All of which is unpleasant news for the politicians who are laburing to promote the interests of American manu- facturers.

Charles Hammond, an American con- fidence operator, who robbed partiés onthe train and at wharves of considerable sums giving them bogus mining bonds in return, has been sentenced by a Montreal Judge to three years in the penitentiary. Lewis Edwin Sanford, who furged a check on the Bank of Toronto for $100, and who is wanted in England and the United States on similar charges, received a sentence of five years in the penitentiary.

A bona fide settler squatted on land near Calgary in 1882, and left it for a time while he went east for implements and _ stock, On his return to Calgary he found that his lot was covered by a grazing lease, But he took possession, and the holders of the lease endeavored to eject him by legal pro- cess. The case came before Stipendiary Magistrate McLeod, and a jary, by whom it was. decided that the squatter was en- tiled tothe land. This shows that the law, however it may affect the speculative squat- ter, protects the man whose intentions are honorable.

At the second annual convention of the Quebec Dairyman’s Association the Society was reported in a prosperous condition, The main object of the meeting was to study the best means of developing the dairy interests in Quebec Province, and papers were read on ‘‘cattle,” lacometers, creamometers, and lactoscopes, their con- struction and how to use them. Mr. W. Hi. Lynch, of Danville, lectured on ‘‘butter- making.” He exhibited an improved set of diary utensils and a scientific outfit to illustrate his system; the essential point in which is that he makes butter-making more @ question of mechanical appliance than manual skill. He would introduce a model dairy in each farm-house rather than look to the education of a few students.
