NARKOW ESCAPE FROM DEATH—A THRILLING NARRATIVE.

About twenty years ago the first telegraph line in the world was buiit and successfully operated between Washiigton city and Baltimore. Sinee then a net work of wires has been through this country, connecting every city, town and village of the slightest importance in inetar- faneons communication. There is hardly a person living who has net, some time or other, more or less, in some degree been benefited by the tele- graph. There is hardly to be found a man or woman to whose heart er pocket the telegraph has not brought words of comfort or sorrow, _ Ae | an operator, I have in my long years of toil noticed, perhaps, more extensively than most others the verification of this tact. Many, wavy times have I, in my capacity as an opera er, received messa- | gee of death, which I shuddered te deliver; and | could not have the courage to witness the grief, | aye, the agony of the bereaved. Sadly have I

| wives, parents, brothers and sisters, waiting | intelligence from the absent aud forever lost. | Joytully have I hurriedly sought parties bearing | to them weleome news of the absent and saved. oy. L have thousands of times experienced cats and pain in consequence of these things; but never have [ experienced the same sensation as on one occasion, in 1864, whew the life and death of two innocent men were in my bands, and but one short minute to save them in, and eighty-one |}milesaway. ‘To cive the public a brief account of this oczurrence is the object of this sketeh :—

During Hunter's raid through the Valley of | Virginia and down the Kanawha, two men, | privates, worn out with fatigue, loss ef rest and | want of food, were left behind, As to their names, | condition in other circumstances, or the incidents

connected with their enlietwent, it is net necessary ie be specitic, or to say other than they were “ substitutes,” and, | au pretty certain, belonged to Western regiments. On that unprecedented march of Hunter's army up the Vailey of Virginia, there was not an individual who participated in it, from the highest officer to the lowest private, but who experienced great suffering and privation. Even now, whenever we meet with one who par- ticipated in the raid, we can hear of the extreme hardsbips of the men, vr some exciting story of a hair-breadth escape frow the enemy, whe followed eo closely upon the line of march. Then it is not strange that these two men “ straggled,” on account of their worn out condition, aud fell inte the enemy's hands.

After being captured by the rebels, they were heavily irened and closely goarded tor some days. Their case was deliberated upon by a drum-head court-martial, which determined that as the Cen- federacy was in great want of men, those parties must enlist in the Confederate service and use their arms against the rederal cause, or be shot. The ultimatum of the court was presented to the prisoners, and with a terrible death staring them in the face, after two hours they determined to pursue the course which promised life and perhaps escape, and expressed their willingness to serve the Confederacy. Their limbs were at onee relieved of irons, and they were given in charge of a company officer whe, with hs com- mand, immediately returned to the east and re- ported himerlf and company ready for service against the Federals, occupying the valley of the Shenandoah. They were assigned to duty in Mosby's guerrillas, under the notorious Harry Gilmore, and soon found active service against the Federals in a raid upon the line of the Balti- more ad Onto Raiiroad. On this raid, which proved unsuccessful, the party were ambuacaded by a company of Federals, and many of them, in- cluding the two men who are the subject of my story, were captured and taken to Harper's Ferry in irons. On arriving at the Ferry they were recognized, and although they told their story in a straightforward manner, they were “ substitutes,” and the evidence of their guilt in being captured while bearing arms against the Government in the character of guerrilias—above ail, the most disreputable mweaus of warfare known—went against them, and they were order- ed to be tried by court-martial on the charge of “desertion” and ‘ bountyjumping.” After several weeks’ imprisonment in the guard-house, they were tried, found guilty, and sentenced to be shot. The sentence of the court was approved by the commanding general, and the day set for the execution. The day before the execution, Father F,, a Catholic Priest and Chaplain of a regiment, then on duty at the Ferry, visited the prisoners, and they told him their story and aub- stantiated it so far as their connection with Gil- more's robbers was concerted by the testimony of one or more rebel prisoners whose evidence was not allowed before the court-tnartial.

Father F., believing their statement, became interested, but without giving any hope for a re- prieve, he charged them to prepare for death. His ouly chance was with the President, and it being late in the day, too late to reach Washing- ton, he determined to use the telegraph. He wrote his wessage to the President, giving a con- cise history of the case, and appealed to Mr. Lincoln, asking God's mercy in behalf of the poor, cast-down prisovers. ‘

The message was seut at once by Mr, D. J. L «then wilitury operator at the Ferry, tothe War Departinent Office.

Father F, returned to the condemned prisoners and remained with them until a late hour in the night, engaged in religious exercises, preparing the men to meet their doo.

The operator remained on duty all night, an- xieusly awaiting the President's reply, but there was none up to daylight, when all the wiree communicating with Washington and Baltinwre went down,

Nine, ten, and even twelve o'clock, noon, came, and yet the wires were still as death—nota parti- cle of current on them could be “fell” or “tested.” The prisoners were to be executed at one-o’clock ¢ Not one word from the President, and all bepe was lost’ Sadly and anxiously did Mr. L. ot hy his instruwent, adjusting and watching for the slightest current.
