The islands were at that time held by the Ger- mans and the invading British force landed and destroyed the great radio and meteorlagical sta- tions and coal piles which had contributed much to the enemy's ability ta prevent many Allied shipments reaching Russia. By means 0f The“! stations, Germany had been able to post her submarines and aircraft in that vicinity on pro- bable weather conditions for several days ahead. The cool which the Germans were mining with forced Russian and Norwegian labor was of very high quality and great material benefit to her over-loaded war machine. Millions of tons of it could be transported across Norway and the Baltic to feed German furnaces. Other millions of tons were shipped to Sweden to supply Swed- ish mills whose products went to Germany. The invasion force of 600 men set every ‘coal pilc aiire by digging tunnels and saturating them with petrol. Moior Andrew sow several of these huge piles on ma, some of them containing 150,000 tons of coal. in. 2,000 Russwns verb ing there were transported to Archangel, and the 1,000 Norwegians -— whose country was in German hands - were taken to Scotland.

We us common ordinary Cana- dians will stop and ponder on those words of Trans-Canada or "across Canada". which we all realize mean so much to our present day lives considering our trade and com- merce over such a highway, besides the unity it will create ln business circles between all classes, races. and creeiis.

Let our first thoughts stray to the land of the Rockies where hu- man skill and machine power will

Now that we are home in the land of prosperity the highway cc-ulrl continue from the West Point landing through Hawthorne and Glenwood by the way of O‘Leary but not forgetting Cascumpec, a great fishing centre. This proposed road could connect with the old No. l2, and serve u wonderful section of the North Shore fishing indus- try. The Grand River ferry could be spanned by a modern floating bridge, so designed that would serve our people when time of travel is worth so much money. Those oyster winters of Malpeque Bay will never lessen its valuation as a highway from trade and scen- ery. If so considered it could re- place the No. 7 section that bord- ers the fertile farm homes of In- dian River, Hamilton. Burlington. Baltic and Long River by way or‘ New Landon.—-Oh boy! what an op- portune time to have that iveaken- irig steel replaced under our con- crete bridges!

From these historical settings. such us the birthplace of L. M. Montgomery in New London i-cnlre, ariil from there to Stanley Bridge we intersect with a portion of the National Park highway, still in its infancy, which was stalled in the early days of our battle for ree- dom. From here we can folio the rumble and dust of tourist cars to the well known Cavendish beaches that have amused and accommodat- ed the people from all parts of this big continent; and "breathes there a man Willi soul so dead who never to himself hath said. “This is rny home my fishing land‘." as Rustica is known to be the oldest and one of the most prosperous fishing centres in the Marltlmes with its ceaseless run of products into the markets of the world. .

I hope your readers will follow mi- over this proposed route to Dal- vny-by-ihe-Sen. its beauty is far beyond rue-seeing is believing. The increasing tourist trade from your to your is ample proof.

Satisfied War Brides

Ii: is no surprise to find on the authority of the Red Cross. which has had mu to do with the brides of ex-s vice men who have come to Canada since the war, that, more than 9,5 per cent of them are now happily established as Canadian citizens.

In the months immediately fol- lowing the war, there were vari- ous reports of dissatisfaction on the part. of girls who had oome here as the wives of veterans. some of them found conditions here for from their liking and in some cases returned to their ear- lier environment. Others said harsh things about the treatment they had received here.

But. these instances, highly pub-

liclzeri though many of them were, actually involved a small minority od the newcomers. T-he

vast, majority of the "war brides," accepting the changed conditions which frequently confronted them in this country, settled down ivlth their husbands and are now hap- py and contented citizens of the Dominion.

This is. of course, merely a re- petition of history. An earlier generation of “vrar brides." immi- grants after the Great War, also met changed conditions when they urlved in this country. Some of the-tn. like a number of their suc- cessors. could not adapt them- selves and became casualties of the post-war bride movement.

But the bulk of these girls and women adjusted themselves to the changes that faced them. appreci- ated the opportunities which fell to their lot and they have non" become some of our best citizens, uhoroughiy satisfied with this country arid having no desire to change their place of residence.

There was and is nothing wrong with the 1939-45 crop of war brides. More than 43,000 o1’ than-i have come to Canada and -more than 95 per cent of them have settled down to become satisfact- ory and ha»?! Canadian citizens. That is exactly whet. we expected of them.

Mah-ltlmers could not help being amused by the fantastic account. of the 1917 ex- plosion in Halifax written by one Edmund Gilligan. printed in the American Mercury. rind condensed to occupy three pages in the Dec-

Unlike the abortive disaster of i945. ivhen a series of explosions rocked the city for a night. and a day, there was one explosion in 1917 Mr. Gilligan had to have more, and although he visited Halifax to gather riinicrlal for his story. drew heavily on his imagination to des- cribe incidents the amount. of TNT which was detonated. and to multi- ply the number of dead and in- jured by roughly four times to a total of 22,000! _
