Barley and Corn ag pig Foods.

An instructive pig feeding experi ment was recently conducted in Ger- many. ‘The objects of the experiment were to determine (1) whether feeding with barley was deleterious when given in large quantities, and (2) to compare the feeding properties of barley and corn. both given with skim-milk. Eight pigs, about seven weeks old, were selected fbr the experiment, and they were fed as follows: During the earlier portion of the experiment the first pair were given whole barley, the second crushed barley, the third crush- ed corn, and the fourth crushed corn with whey. Numbers one, two, and three were also given equal quantities of potatoes; and the weight of whey given to the fourth pair was about three times the weight of potatoes given to the third pair, equal amounts of corn being given. ‘The same quantity of skim-milk was given throughout to all, At the end of nine weeks several vari ations were made in the quantity and kind of food given, and by about the end of four months it had been estab lished that crushed barley had produc ed better results than the whole grain ; also, that up to this point the crushed ley than the crushed corn. ‘The general result of the experiments led. to the conclu- sion that giving barley in whole, rough grain is harmful, and that is not advis- able to feed pigs under four months too freely on maize. Many sheep breeders will be select ind their rams now. It is important work and needs judgement. Much of the success of the future stock depends on the sire. are many. Therefore in buying do not begrudge a few dollars extra to get a superior animal. Such a sum would not go far in purchasing good ewes, but it will make a great difference in the quality of the ram that can be pur- chased, and it is through the superior quality of the ram that most farmers count to improve the quality of their flock. By getting really good rams it is astonishing how quickly the quality for a flock can be improved. We are not likely to see the high prices for wool that once prevailed ; therefore the more need to give special attention to the mutton qualities of the sire <A heavy fleece is all right if it goes with the other.—Farming.

Our Beef Cattle -More Blood Wanted

Mr Duncan McEachern, Chief Live Stock Inspector for the Dominion, as a result of his observations at British ports of landing while on a visit there during the past season, came to the conclusion that our beef cattle, com— pared with others, are degenerating for want of fresh blood, and says that some- thing ought to be done to encourage more importations of pure-bred bulls. The Argentine stockmen have beer the most extensive purchasers of British pure-bred stock of late years, and their cattle, a sresult show great improvement on reaching the British markets. ‘To get the benefit of our nearness to the English market,” concludes the Doctor “we must produce cattle of the most improved and most profitable breeds.” Exchange.

Winter dairying has many advan— tages, as has often been noted in these columns. Itjfurnishes profitable em ployment for the farmer and his men at a season uf the year when, without it, the farm hands have to lay idle or work for low wages, and it furnishes a means of income that it is a folly for the farmer to overlook.

Weed out the cows that are not returning a profit and then use a_ bull of some recognized dairy herd who comes from a strain of milk producers. By a method of this kind, carefully and intelligently practised, a dairyman will in a very few years be in the possession of a good dairy herd.

Sudden changes in the cow’s rations usually decrease the milk yield, even when the new ration is better than the old. When it isnecessary to make a change in the ration the change should

mation of the active volcano discovered in the Atlin gold district in British Columbia is to the eftect that the volcano furnishes the miners light by which to work their claims duringthe long darkness of the Arctic winter. The glare from the sproui- ing lava, reflected back againstthe ekv, gives au alinO-t continuous light to the upper end of the Atlin district. From Dr W B Kingrlowe and T H James, wining men of Deover, the best and apparen'ly the most authentic description of the Alaskan Vesuvius, “The mountain io eruption,” ssid Dr Kingslowe, “is the second range of four towering pe-ks lying about 50 miles due south of Lake G'adies and a elghtly snorter distance from Atlin City. These m uvtains areall of at least 14,000 feet altitude, the era’er resting a trifle below its toree brother peaks, Itwas in the early part of October that the emoke was firs: seen issuing from (he mountain. With the thought of a volcano furthest from thier miods the miners attributed these first “gps of eruption to clouds hanging about the peak. So constant, however, was the cloud that it became an object of daily observance from Atlin City. Then on November 8 the mountain burst forth in flames. Through the *«mokec!louds there ebot a stream of molien lava, boulders and ashes that brightened the sky a radins ot nearly 40 miles, and sent its refi cied light through the darkne<8 down upon the men working on Birch, Discovery, McKee, Pine and other creeks, the sides of whose banks turn towards the vileano.
