Kevin Skilliter threaded a low shot past goalie Darren Cossar at 11:37 of the third period to give UPEI a 4-3 victory over the Dalhousie Tigers Saturday at the Forum.
The win gave the Panthers a two game sweep of the best- of-three Atlantic Universities Hockey Conference semi- final and now advance to the AUAA Final series against the Universite de Moncton.
UdeM captured the other semi-final with a convincing 9-3 shallacking of the Acadia University Axemen Sunday in Moncton to win that series. 2-1.
Saturday, Dalhousie opened the scoring in the first period on a power play effort as Neil Megannaty beat UPEI goalie Dave Reid to take a 1-0 first period lead.
Dalhousie looked as though..they-weres.maeto upset the Panthers with their close-checking but UPEI’s defence tightened up and _ their offence kicked into gear for the second period.

Albert Roche, Gordie Roche and Jeff Steffen scored for UPEI and Steve Fulton who was named Nortons’ Player of the Game assisted on all three markers.

goals in the third period to tie the game and it looked as though the Panthers were going to slip into a third period collapse.
John Cossar scored at :43 and Terry Crowe added another at 4:06 to round out the scoring for the Tigers.
Garth Arsenault got the puck back to- Kevin Skilliter who blasted his point shot pass Cossar, who faced 44 'shots during the entire game, for the winning goal which sent the' Fans in the- Forum to their feet in a simultaneous sigh of relief. ’ ,

For the first time in the history of the UPEI men’s basketball team, the Panthers have clinched first place in the, Atlantic Universities basketball conference.
UPEI finished its regular season games last weekend with back-to-back victories at St. Francis Xavier, winning 77-72 in Saturday’s match, then coming from behind to pull a 70-68 victory on Sunday.
On Saturday the Panthers were up 40-34 at half time, and opened up a 13-point lead before the X-Men made their move, closing the gap to 3points.

However, the Panthes’ Aion Pettigrew hit three consecutive jumpers to hold off the X-Men.
Tyrone Norman led the Panthers with 18 points, while Pettigrew had 13.

Sunday’s game was a per- fect example of the Panthers’ refusal to give up. UPEI‘ trailed 40-39 at the half, and in the dying minutes was down by 4 points.
But with a heroic effort sparked by Tejan Alleyne, the Pantherstook the lead with 10 seconds left, and hung on for the victory.

Panthers were Delroy Adams and Trevor Willock with 16 points each.
The Panther victories last weekend gave the team a 16-4 record and first place in the AUAA. The Acadian Axe- men have the same record, but the Panthers hold first place because they defeated Acadia in three out of four meetings.
This weekend, UPEI heads off to the AUAA playoffs in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, wherre they will meet fourth- place Mount Allison. Second place Acadia takes on third ranked St. FX. The sudden- death final is at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Greg Gravel, who was edged out of the scoring title by Robbie Forbes of UNB _ and Claude Vilgrain of Udem ‘scored twice for the Panthers which played to 2—2 first period tie with UdeM and trailed 6-4 after two periods.
RON Carragher, Bob MacDonald and Gordie Roche each scored one goal in the game which was full of minor penalties with ref Ray Jollimore handing out about 25 minor penalties — shared equally between the two team.
.-The Panthers clinched first
place in the AUHC with an ousting of Jack Drover’s Mount Allison Mounties in the final regular season game in the conference.

UPEI outshot the highly; spirited Mounties 43-35 and the P’s played with a depleted defence because Darwin McCutcheon and Kevin Skilliter were both ejected from the contest for fighting in the first period.
This allowed the Mounties to mount a minor comeback in the final frame but UPEI hung on to their 7-2 second period lead with the final tally being 7—4 in favor of the P’s‘.
The Panthers play this weekend against the Univer-v site De Moncton Blue Eagles ' at the Charlottetown Forum as the AUHC fina'i concludes with two games Saturday and Sunday, both scheduled for qugpm. '

The Female Athlete of the Week Award this week goes collectively to the entire women’s basketball team.
According to the Athletic Department, all the members of the team contributed to play in their games last week- end in Fredericton. making it hard to pick one standing above the rest.

McAloney, Joan Chambers, Allison Duke, Tracey Mac- Eachern and Cindy Doyle.
