Ve1ma Carmody of Marshfie1d notes that there were severa1 fema1e Hairy and Downy Wood eckers at her feeder throughout January and February, but no ma1es were seen until a ma1e Downy was spotted March 1. What ratio of woodpeckers do you have at your feeder?

SQUABBLE AT THE FEEDER. Glen MacLaren of New Perth reports an interesting incident which occurred at a neighbour's (Stan Miodowski) feeder in mid January. Mr. Miodowski had set out some sunflower seeds on a stump in his yard. A squirrel came to feed but was soon scared away by the arrival of a cowbird. The squirrel returned and chased the cowbird, only to be driven off by a bluejay which fed briefly before flying.off. Two evening grosbeaks arrived and began to feed. The squirrel returned and grabbed at one of the grosbeaks, injuring its wing. It fluttered over to the base of a tree, where the Miodowski's were able to catch it. They kept it indoors in a cat cage for about a month (there was no cat in the cage at the time) and then, thinking the wing to be as good as new, released the bird. It seemed to be getting along alright for a while but after a few days the wing began to droop and the bird's flight became a bit crooked. At last report the bird (crooked wing included) is still on the go, and regularly drops in at both the MacLaren and Miodowski feeders.
