The debate on Cartwright’s want of con- fidence motion was continued in the House of Commons all yesterday's session and until three o’clock this morning, when a vote was taken. The motion was defeated by 103 to 81, the G@vernment majority being 22.

In the Senate, yesterday, Mr. Abbott introduced a bill to prevent frauds, The design of the measure is to punish public officials who accept bribes and people who imay attempt te bribe them. Contractors who give bribes are debarred from govern- ment contracts.

Orrawa, Sept. 4.

Before the Senate Railway Committee, yesterday; proceedings in the Bay Chaleur case were closed. Langelier addressed the committee and made a pitiable exhibition of himself. Before concluding, he was forced to retract every charge he had preferred against Senator Robitaille and to eat his own words. He tried to shelter himself under his imperfect knowlege of the English language, and said he had been misunderstood and his language incorrectly translated.

The evidence before the special committee of the House of Commens complete'y acquits Cochrane of chargé of selling appointments to officers made against him by Annias Cameron.

In the Dominion mitch Sapper Moorea and Sergt. Davison won $6 each; in the Rideau match, Captsin Longworth and Corpl. Baird won $5 each; in the Ouimet match, Sergt. B. C. Prowse won $5, and Sergt. Dsvison $5. In the Snider aggregate Capt. Hooper won good prizes in 500 and 800 yards. In the extra series Lieut. EK. A. Smith of John, won the Governor-General prize with 94 points, and Sergt. Rolston a second. Jas, Dover tied for third.

Havirax, Sep. 3. — Quebec — Good catches of cod are reported to-day at Shel- drake, St. John’s River and Seven Islands, and fair at Magpie, Long Point and Moisie. Launce very plentiful at Thunder River, Long Point, Seven Islands and St. Mar- guerite, and good at Sheldrake and Moisie.

Cape Breton—owing to scarcity of bait and heavy weather at Lunenburg all fish- ing suspended to-day. Small mackerel are taking hooks at St. Peter’s and at Arichat, and a few herring in nets at the latter.

Nova Scotia—Cod are reported plentiful off shore and mackerel and herring scarce at Lunenburg. No other reports received to-night.

New Brunswick—The only reports re- ceived to-day is from Port Escuminac, where but few mackerel are being taken.

P. E. Island—Fair catches of mackerel were made at Miminigash yesterday and to-day, andafew taken at Georgetown. Hake are reported very plentiful and cod fair at the latter.

Eprxsuren, Sept. 2.—The recent storms which swept over the British Isles have half ruined the crops throughout Scotland, and the harvest is at a complete standstill.

Dusty, Sept. 2.—The river Barrow, in Waterford, is overflowing its banks and destroying the crops. Houses and barns have been swept away, and great distress exists.

Boston, Sept. 2.—The supreme court to- day sent down a decision that the Boston Chamber of Commerce must pay Neil Mc- Neill $14,500, which is the amount of dam- ages that a jury found for McNeill some months ago in consequence of being refused the coutract to build the new chamber of commerce building in Boston. McNeill was the lowest bidder for the contract.

Braprorp, Pa. Sept. 2.—A suicide mania has taken possession of the aged members of the local agnostic circle here. It. was founded by the late Dr. Stuart, who himself led the way by taking his own life. Since then three other members of the circle have tried to kill “themselves. Two succeeded. The last case occurred yester- day when Elias Eleasiey, aged 66, took a dose of poison and died from the effects,
