A rire broke out in St. Jean Paptiste vi'- lage, one of the suburbs of Montreal, on the Ist inst., and spread with great rapidity. Before it could be subdued $75,000 worth of property was destroyed, and forty families were rendered homeless.

YESTERDAY morning a mischevious person cut down a handsome tree which stood before the residence of Mrs. Stamper, on Queen St. We learn that proceedings will be taken against the person for his mischief.

YESTERDAY evening a young man passing a grocery store on Grafton Street, cooly hel himself to a number of parcels which were in a cart opposite the store, put them in his bar- row, and was wheeling them off when the pro- prietor caught and took the parcels from him.

Tue death of Col. Northey, of the 60th Rifles, is announced by cable. He was se- verely wounded in the recent engagement with the Zulus. In hisdeath the British army loses a most gallant and accomplished officer. He was well known in Canada, having takena prominent part in the Red River expedition. He was the son-in-law of Col. Gzowski, of Toronto.

Mr. Frep. Aviison, agent at Halifax of the Confederation and British North Amerivan Assurance offices and meteorological ageat, died on the Ist inst. He was a son of the Hon. Joseph Allison, for many years a mem- ber of the Legislative Council and one of the famous ‘* Council of Twelve.” Deceased was a prominent Conservative, and a director of the Daily Herald Printing Company.

A Hauirax dispatch says it is stated that beef is so low in the Newfoundland market that the drovers of Arichat and Antigonish, N.8., are doubtful as to whether they will send any more there, and the cattle will likely go to Halifax, in which case beef will be cheap there. There has been almost a revolation in this business within a year, caused by importa- tion of Canadian cattle for the supply of our own and other markets.» The steamer ‘* Mis- sissippi’’ could not take on board all the cattle that have been waiting for her. VIENNA, May 2.

The propositions which Schouvaloff brought here were inacceptable. He takes to London a counter proposition by Andrassy, to the effect that Austrio-Hungary will consent to August 31, as the date for the complete evacu- ation, if Russia will declare to the Bulgarians her firm resolve to co-operate with the Powers in the execution of the Berlin Treaty.

It is stated that the Russians are much dis. pleased at the Czar’s action in prohibiting the election of a Russian to the throne of Bul- varia. The Czar, however, declared he weuld not accept the responsibility of a pauslairst agitation of which Bulgaria will be the centre. In the meantime he would retain the power of acting against Bulgaria itself should his forebodings be realized.

Messrs. Scammell Brothers, ship brokers (19 Old Slip, New York, and Magee Block, St. John, N. B.,) report under date of New York, April 26 : **The tonnage arrivals having become comparatively light, a better feeling pervades the market, the period being close at hand for large receipts of produce via canal. There is, as yet, a liberal supply of handy vessels for all trades, but with business improving and Philadelphia and Baltimore sharply com- peting, an early and_ substantial ad vance in ‘or grain is among the

rates tor strong probabilities, and an advance in that department means an improvement in the others. The reduced available supply of cereals, and the tenacity of holders, has mili- tated somewhat against activity in grain freights, yet the business of the week has been quite equal to the recent average, while there are indications of an early revival ia the petroleum trade. The shipments of oil to the far east coutinue, and this is about the only branch of the long voyage trade that betrays any degree of animation. Tobaceo, cotton and naval store freights remain quiet, with no material change in rates. ‘There is a brisk demand for timber ships at the yellow. pine ports; but the bids are too low to secure thein, namely : 35s. « 37s. Gd. for hewn, and £5 1%. a £5 15s. for sawn. At the Pro- vincial deal ports, business is slow for the same reason, the current quotaticns from St. John, N. B., to Liverpool being 55s. The demand for vessels for the Cuba sugar trade has fallen off, and the rates are the turn lower; otherwise the West India trade remains in substantially the same position as last week. South American freights show little -improve- ment, cither as regards demand or quotations, the rates hence to River Plate being $14@$15 per M for lumber, and 14@l5c. per foot for generalcargo. Coastwise lumber freights haye advanced a little, while the collier rates re main steady, the suppiy of vessels being mod- erate.”
