The state branches of the National Education Association - equivalents of the PEIFT - face vigorous competition by locals of the United Federation of Teachers and other teachers’ unions affiliated with the AFL—CIO. Middle class parents anxious to place their off- spring in prestige university colleges, demand better preparatory education than can be offered by teachers with more course work in“curriculum and methods” and “Principles of education”, than in disciplines like math physics, and English The Youth Revolt is now raging in the high schools (even the Junior Highs): the kids will nolonger put up with teachers who don’t know their subjects and treat their students like Pav- lovian dogs.

Under a three-flank attack by parents, pupils, and progressive teachers, the educationists in America are in retreat. Several states- including the two biggest, California and New York - have revolutionized their licensing rules. Now any university graduate with the equivalent of honor in a subject field may be awarded a provisional teachers certificate, and a permanent certificate after a year or two of competent teaching. Beginning salaries in many districts in these states are now in the $9-10,000 range for teachers with a MA. or MS. degree in academic subjects. The political establishment in these communities

Many individuals and several Anglican Church groups have approached me re the general con- tents and in particular the “Advertisement” on the last page of the September 30th issue of CADRE.

In the general contents the articles “Marian Opens Her Drawers — Pregnancy Test?-- Get It Off Your Chest ‘(Burn the Bra), were the sort of things one expects of the adolescent approach to sex, which most of us had grown out ofin high school.

The Pregnancy Control Center, Inc. has been fornred as a family planning agency and counseling service to assist women who have been encountering tremendous obst- acles in obtaininglegal abortions. The Cen- ter was brought into being after consultat- ions with doctors, lawyers, teachers, and others involved in the abortion reform movement.

Too often in the past, women who have been seeking help or advice has been misled or extravagantly charged. We pride our- selves in having the best possible facilities available at the most reasonable cost. All charges, including American Board Certified Gynecologist, Anaesthesiologist and the hospital are prepaid by us, and therefore advance payment is required.

Our services are confidential, discreet and prompt. We complete all arrangements on the telephone to insure medical expediency and individual peace of mond. When a woman registers with our Center, she is given a spec- 'fic admitting time at the hospital as well as information concerning all pre-operative

procedures, and what shecan expect upon her arrival. She may also visit with us to 'discuss any problems or fears. In the near furture we will be starting a social work service at the Center.

Before she contacts us, the woman should be advised as to how far she is into her preg- nancy. This is a very important factor in de- termining the type of operation required and governs the hospital as to what procedures to \ follow. Parental consent generally must be ’ 6N obtained by girls under twenty-one years of age, unless they can show that they are em- ancipated, that is employed and no longer considered a minor under law.

know that if capable teachers are to be hired, they must be paid salaries at least equivalent to those of unionized janitors. They also know that bright, imaginative, creative university students are unlikely to retain these qualities after a heavy diet of stultifying courses in“teaching methods.” i.e., regimentation and indoctrination.

In 1964, a group of professors associated with Antioch College of Yellow Springs, Ohio. started the Antioch-Putney Graduate School of Educa- tion with centers in rural Vermont and the Wash- ington, D.C., ghetto. This was the first Ameri— can school of education to successfully break out of the “curriculum and methods” syndrome. Antioch-Putney, which in six years has graduated over 400 students, offers a Master of Arts in Teaching degree to students completing the eq- uivalent of one year of intensive study in a sub- ject matter on cross-disciplinary field. There are no “education courses,” and in place of “prac- tice teaching” under lockstep supervision the degree candidate interns in a ghetto or rural school, experimenting with teaching techniques of his own devising. There are, in fact, no formal courses, course credits, or grades in this unique school of education.

In the past five years other Masters in Teaching programs, most of them less imaginative and- more conventional than the Antioch-Putney scheme, have been set up at twenty or more

,university level institutions in the United States. . All have the objective of drawing into the tea-

ching profession university students (as well as “over thirties” dissatisfied with their earlier training or seeking a new challange) unwilling to be dragooned by educational bureaucrats.

We are convinced that the health of P.E.I. ’5 public education system-including the Univer- sity of P.E.I. where many Island students com- plete their formal education - will be greatly improved by attracting to the teaching profession the same kind of students who proceed on to academic graduate schools intending to become university professors. We therefore propose that a committee of concerned students, university faculty, school teachers, and members of the public be established at once to lobby for (l) the revocation of the new licensing rules and (2) the substitution of regulations granting a prov- visional license at the present Certificate Four level to any university graduate interested in teaching as a profession.

We also recommend that the University Senate supplant the present methodology-centered Bac- helor of Education degree program with a Master of Arts, Master of Science in Teaching curriculum in which concentration in a subject matter dis- cipline is supplemented by study of social and political dynamics and contemporary problems— the new program to be directed by a Committee on Teacher Preparation including elected rep- resentatives of each academic department.

PROVIDING INFORMATION LEADING TO HIS ARREST WILL BE REWARDED”. To many, this is most revolting, and yet on second thought I ask the question: What is happening here?

First, when man says “I Believe”, he immed-' iately begins to make God in his own image and Christ has often been identified with every type of group which wish to use Him for their own purpose. Secondly, in the Advertisement, there is very little indication of historical research or theological study. It is evidence of what is hap- pening to-day in the secularization of life, in which people are not hostile to God; they say God may be there but He does not matter. Hence, we have much of the humanism of to- day with all its urge for secular revolution, some of it justified by the lack of concern of Chris- tians. The mistake is that the radical secularists attempt, as I suggest this “advertisement” does, to identif with Christianity, that is they are

The Christ of the CADRE Wanted Advertise- ment, like the stained glass Christ of many chu- rches, is not the Christ of the Gospel or the Creeds of the Church. I accept the sincerity of the Editor but some may see the “Advertise- ment” against the whole background of secular- ism in our Universities and reason, not illogically, that this is a nihilistic attempt to get at the estab— lishment. whatever that is, by appearing to a attack what Christians generally hold sacred. If the persons were instrumental in producing this issue of CADRE are sincere, I suggest that they and Christian leaders engage in a public dialogue on “The Person and Message of the Historical Jesus”, and would be happy to offer the facilit-
