THe management of the Canadian Pacific Railway are making arrangements for the running of a regular train between Montreal and Ottawa—a distance of about 120 miles, in two hours and a half—an average rate of speed of about 48 miles an hour, This is probably the fastest time for an equal distance on any railway in America, while few trains in England obtain as high a rate. ~
DirgTHeRia is prevalent in the Island of Cape Breton, and the following notice, cut from the death list of the local press, will give an idea of the awful character of the scourge: “Of diphtheria, the first week of July, Allan, aged 18; Johnny, 16; Mary Jane, 11; Christy, 6; and Willie, 4; children of Mr. Donald McDonald and Ann McDonald, River Dennis Road, Inverness. Ow Saturday judgment was delivered in the West Simcoe, Ont., election case, unseating 0. J. Phelps, who was elected in February last by a majority of 29 over bis Conservative opponent, Mr. Moberly. Their Lordships took the view that neither the charge of per- oval bribery nor bribery by agents had been sustained, but that the amount of liquor con- sumed on polling day had a demoralizing effect upon the electorate. They therefore declared the respondent unseated with costs.

A. A. Bywoy, Esg., of the firm of Bynon & Co, editors and publishers of the Oakland Home Journnl, No. 1068 Broadway, Oakland, Cal., is in Tryon, P. EK. L, on a visit to his brother and other friends. Mr. Bynon left Tryon—the home of his boyhood—in 1841, being twelve years of age, and served his time in the Gazette office, then published by Mr. Haszard of Charlottetown. He was ten years at the printing business with Mr. Haszard and then left for the Stars and Stripes, where he has, for the past thirty-two years, pro- secuted his calling with apparent success.

By this mortning’s train Mr. Robt. A. Anderson, of Belfast, took his departure for British Columbia. Mr. Anderson has had charge of the Southport School during the last three years, and has taken a high piace as a teacher. His genial nature and good charac- ter has made him many fast friends. He is accompanied by Mr. James McLean of Belfast, who also carries with him the best wishes of a large circle of friends. To-morrow morning Mr. John Aylward, son of Capt. Aylward, Southport, leaves for San Francisco. These young men have acted their part well here,

It is strange that the first two victims to cholera among our officers should be artil- lery men. Their loss is particularly sad, as chey were expected home by their friends | some months ago. Poor ‘‘Beauty” Croft, | as he was familiarly Known in society, was | near his turn for horse artillery when he | sailed for Ismalia, He served through the | campaign in a field battery, which was sent home soon after the grand review at Cairo. Croft expected to return with it, but at the last moment he was transferred to a horse artillery battery, in which a vacancy had occurred through the promotion of one of its subalterns. This battery was one of those left behind. Le Quesne, on the other hand, never set foot in Egypt till long after all the fighting—such as it was— came toanend. He had not very iong joined a battery at Woolwich, and was ordered out, very much against his will, to take the place of a subaltern invalided home from Cairo. His name, however, was left on the roll of the Woolich battery, and he was given to understand that he would return to it when the battery he was attached to left Egypt. Notwithstanding this, a few days before it embarked for England, he was again transferred to another battery under orders to remain at Cairo for an in- definite period. ‘‘I don’t believe,” said
