fter a long exercise in cock-teasing, Guns n’ Roses nally released their latest, Use Your Illision, last uesday. Is it worth the wait? Hardly, what could e? Not that it matters. If this thing doesn’t sit on ip of the charts until it gets buttsoresthen my ame’s Carlos Santana. The new album, a sprawling vo disc/cassette set that locks in at around two anu a alf hours, contains some great music. ‘‘Loma’’, § Cicil War’’, ‘‘Locomotive’’, ‘‘Bad Apples’’, ‘‘Dust 'Bones’’, and some others rank amongst the best (if ot the best) hard rock around (true, this isn’t saying uch). There’sno riffs here that grab me quite the ay ‘‘ Welcome to the Jungle’’, ‘‘Mr. Brownstone’’, even “*Sweet Child 0’ Mine’’ did, but while the cks aren’t as big here, there’s more of them. Well, ere’s the good.

ow the bad. Factnumber one: These guys are sholes. What’s wiht the self-defensive sticker on eccover? Or “‘Getin the Ring’’, a hateful heap of, y-baby bitching? Why are they so sour? Has life ‘en that rough on them? Spare me. Fact number fo; These guys are really dumb. At best their lyrics € easily ignored; at worst, they’re enough to turn yu off the whole album. Fact number three: These lys curse too much. I have nothing against profan- y when it serves a purpose, but here it just seems ce they get off hearing the sounds coming out of eir mouths. Factnumber four: These guys are xist pigs. After the tenderness of ‘‘Patience’’ and . Child 0’ Mine’’ the admirable, albeit dopey, litics of ‘‘Civil War’’ (‘‘Whay so civil ‘bout any- ay’’ - their spelling, not mine), and covers of the sof Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney, I thought be they were growing up but nooooo. Fact ber five (last one): These guys can’t really write 8. This is the big one, what keeps them from g the modern day Rolling Stones. I thought they dbe( oreven the new Led Zeppelin). Nonethe- I’ve resigned myself to this and enjoyy them as ly some pleasure. After all, who else caneven ll the Stones, the New York Dolls, Led Zep, smith, and a ton of others on one album (well

musically iidentical versions of ‘‘Don’t Cry’’ here? You could’ ve just printed the alternative lyrics, guys.

After all that, it’s hard to believe I like this album. However, it’s also a big disappointment because it doesn’t look like this band will ever be as good as I thought they’s be. Gunsn’ Roses will probably be eeternally foiled be their stupidity, mean-spiritedness, and lack of songwriting ability. Nonetheless, Id rather listen to a missed opportunity that a never-had- an-opportunity.

Debating Society

The U.P.E.I. Debating Society holds its regular weekly meetings on Tuesdays at 4:00 in room 411 of the Main Building. We generally discuss upcoming Debating events (such as tournaments) and then we try to have a practice round of debating or public speaking.

When I joined the Society last year, I was a scared and nervous freshman. Although public speaking and debating is still hard for me, everyone agrees that I have improved since last September. By this time next year, I hope to be much better than I am now.

Debating is open to everyone: e.g. full-time students, mature students, graduate students; and all students can benefit from this society. Debating is not just for students from one field of study. The Society is made up of students from several faculties, including: Political Studies, Chemistry, Math & Computer Science, Business, Sociology etc.
