’ Granted that the individuals. who make up the group may not offer much, by precept or exam- ple, towards solving your diffi- culties, still, the fact is that in their midst, in the common quest for answers to problems, you are brought ‘‘in out of the cold’’ of numbly isolated introspective’ loneliness, as regards your wor- ries. :

In essence, group therapy is, first of all, a sort of thawing-out process. : z

It is the fundamental reassur- ance of finding that you are’nt alone in the dark, that you are, rather, in the same bo't . with lots of other shipwrecked light seekers, after having felt lost at sea. It is this aspect of group therapy that atitomatically re- news hope, interest and energy, with respect to problem-solving. I mean, it sparks this renewal in persons who have the latent capacity to help themselves, if shown the way. Persons who can’t or won't help themselves, | bootstrap-wise; can’t be helped | by others either. j

Fraternization, meaningful be- longing, a considerate sharing of qne’s experience with others, for the. common good, is as neces- sary to the individual’s mental balance and social growth as water is essential to organic health.
