lar stranger “doing the town,’ and as_ his replies to the officer’s questions were not very satisfactory, he was placed under ar- rest. On his arrival atthe jail he gave his name as the Duke of Wellington. He grew very angry when the officer doubted the truth of his words, and he began to ex- hibit various bullet and sword wounds to prove his identity, and explained to the of- ficer the danger of arresting aduke. He was left in care of Jailer Bernard, however and swears he will expel “the force” on his release. ee

THE STANLEY AT THE CAPES.

Sir,—When will our Government see the need of placing the SS. Stanley at Cape Traverse? You would think that the business men of theIsiand would de- mand that the Government build a_har- ber for her at Cape Traverse and have the crossing winter and summer here. We have had a very severe winter avd there has not been one fine day the SS&. Stanley would have crossed in less than one hour. Last week while she was stuck out in the ice there has not been ice enough in the Straits here to stop a tug boat. Yesterday the ice boats crossed in vne hour and fifty minutes and never hauled on the ice, but rowed all the way. To-day it is clear from board ice to board ice, with the exception of about one mile of drift—thin ice.

Surely the public in general willdemand | a trial here and not let personal interests keep the Stanley any longer on the route she is on; for there is no doubt that when ever we have easterly winds she will be stuck again, and easterly winds clear the Straits’ ice and leaves it all water.

There is no doubt that the placing of the Stanley here will hurt a good many

personally. Bat the Government should not consider personal injuries if it is go- ing to benefit the Island generally. I have no doubt in my mind but it would do away with the boat service here, which would be a loss to the piace, as I expect

there is over $6,000 per season spent here in the boat service, clear of the boats and equipment. Let the Government take | that $6,000 and the difference in the cost of running the SS. Stanley 40 miles in- stead of 8 miles, and they would in a few years, save money enough to build the pier here.

There is some objection about extending the pier here on account of the sand. | am not an engineer, but itis my opinion there will be no trouble in overcoming the sand. Ifthe present wharf were extended 500 feet, it would give 25 feet o° water at the lowest tides, which would be quite sufficient. Would it not be well for the boards of trade to strike now for justice ? There is no doubt but this is the natural crossing winter and summer; and the cost of the harbor here would not exceed
