Scott, Secretary of state, was asked if there was any truth in the report from London that Mr. Chamberlain had for- warded to Lord Aberdeen last week impor- tant recommendation onthe future trade relations between Canada and the United States from the imperial point of view. “Mr. Chamberlain never sent any sugges- tions here upon the subject—would never think of doing so,” said he. “On the status of the sealing question they are well posted in England, because its national and intercolonial importance and because upon it hinges the finding of the Paris tribunal ofarbitration. Butthey are very little concerned in the xiao of our immediate trade relations with the United States, the alien labor law, the bonding privilege, and so on, except that they would like to.see a settlement of these questions, which, while not of supreme importance in themselves are a source of irritation between Canada ‘and the United States, and furnish a con- stant theme for the beligerent press on both sides.”
