Recommend Wage Increase For 100

OTTAWA (GP)-A 10-cent hour- ly wage increase on a (1.28 basic rate for some 100 members of the National Catholic syndicate of bongehoremau of Sorel, Que, was recommended in a conciliation board report issued Friday by the labor department.

The board, consisting of Judge Andre Montpetlt of the Quebec Superior Court and Leonce Plante and Marc Lapointe, both of Man- treal, recommend that the in- crease. effective July 23 for men who are employed by a group of Sorel steveclorlng companies.

The board also recommended time and a half for night work in- stead of the present premium of 26 cents an hour now being paid: a boost of 20 cents an hour from 10 in the premium for foreman: and addition of the day of the Imma- culate Conception. Dec. 8, to the five statutory holidays now re- 'cogni7.ed in the agreement between the syndicate and the companies. The board recommended against granting a syndicate request for a closed shop.

Mr. O'Brien, who is a native of Moncton, joined the railway ser- vice as a junior clerk in the pen- sions and staff records ofiice in that city in October 1106, later becoming clerk, senior ledger clerk, senior insurance clerk and chief clerk in September 1943.
