It will be remem: vered that a few springs ago Lady Aberdeen had a narrow eecape from ¢ drowned while driving slong the Gatineau river The spring fresheis had washed away a portioa ot the roadway, and the epirited team attached to the Vices Regal carriage b.came unmanageable and p unged into the swiftly running waters and were drowned. Lady Aberd¢en bare! escaped with her life.

Cure Champagoe on the following Sun lay held a thapkagiving service in the Roman Catholic church at Gatineau Point, a littl attention which woa for him the gratitude of the Governor-General and Lady Aberdeen, A few Sundays later tb: church wae supolied with a new bell, tie gift of Vice Royalty, aad the Cure becaw # great friend and frequeat visitor of Lord aud Lady Aberdeen at the V:ce-Rega! resi- dence across the Ottawa River,

Now it seems that Cure Champagne during bis lifetime was a @cilled musician, and ehen engaged ia his favorite pursuit was apt to become very much absorbed aud oblivicus as to wkat was going on about him. It was about the time this friendship sprang up that the Governor- Gonera! bad installed in the private chapei at Rideau Hall,a vew church organ of which he was ¢Xzeeding'y proud. Que day, when calling at the moderate mansion of the Cure, Lord Aberdeen, knowing Father Champagne’s love for music ir- vited him over the river to try his new organ. The Cure was of course much de liginted, and at the specified time presented himself at the Vice Regal residence. He was covducited by Lord Aberdeen to the chapel, and was sovn absorbed in pro ducing volumes of music from the new organ. The organ, however, had only been installed a few days, and there had been time to have it provided with the electric machinery neceseary to pump the wind for the bellows. When the Cure eat duwn to pley Lord Aberdeen recollected that the servant who was usually on haod to work the lever of the beliows had not been notificd that the organ was to be tesiel, and of courso was not on hand, Not wiehing to detain the en bueas tic Cure until a servant could be called, Lord Aberdeen quietly elipped behiud the curtain pravideu to conceal the human air pumping macuime, and began io oper- ate the lever. For a fall half hour the Cure ponred fourth a flocd of meiody while His Excel ency supplied the wind. Ffoa ly, tne Rv. Fasher ceased play‘og or @ moment, and the Geovereor- General, pasing from bis exertion, and in a bath of persprati»», stepped from behind the curtaia and 1p a panting voice asked the Cure how he liked the instrument, Father Champagne ill ua- suepicious of the tremcodous exertions of hia illustrious host, expressed hie keen appreciation and indicated the deside to render cnother ora‘ory.
