The story centers about. Eliza- beth Curtis who. with her broth- er, John Goode. has come to Nai- robi from England in the hope of locating her missing husband, Henry Curtis. who had set out la year earlier in search of the King Solomon diamond mines.

Elizabeth persuades the white hunter. Allan Quart.ermain.to lead their safari through the most in- accessible part of the continent. it is a journey which takes them through a solid mass of jungle. deadly swam-ps, giant forests. the desert country. the plains and over snow-capped mountains, and one in which danger in the form of attacking animals and hostile na- tives. thirst. fever and ,exhaustion threatens every step.

After crossing the treacherous Zabambari River, they are almost, trampled to death by an animal stampede which catches them in a narrow pass. (The shots of this terrifying stampede, with thous- ands of wild beasts of every de- scription fleeing from a brush fire, offer an uniforgcttable spect- acle.) Now. as they approach the Kaluana Kraal. country of the fierce Kalauna tribe. the fright- ened bearers desert the safari but they are led to the Kalsuna vil- las by a regal-looking native, named Umbopa. T. of Trinity Unit- ed Church. met. at the home of Millie Lake Thursday afternoon. The meeting opened with the C. G. I. T. purpose and prayer. fol- lowed by the devotional period. After the call to worship and singing of a hymn. the Scripture was read by Sandra Rendell. A prayer of thanks was repeated in unison. The president. Miss Millie Lake. presided over a. short busi- ness meeting. Plans were made for a hike to be held on Saturday at- ternoon. Roll call was answered by one of the ten comma d ents. Miss Lake will be the leader of the devotional period next week. Two chapters from the book "Chen's Mother,” were read by the leader. The meeting closed with the sing- ing of "Taps."

Upon the death, by drowning. at Halifax, of the British officer on loan. Major Weatherble (promoted while in England in 1907) was posted to Halifax as Senior Ord- nance Officer for the Maritimes. Inspecting Ordnance Officer for Land and Naval munitions, Coin- mendant of the Ordnance School and on the staff of the General Officer Commanding.

Thus three peaceful (?) years passed.

Quebec-made small arms ammu- nition. due to faulty primers (caps) was not looked upon favorably by msrksmen so the Minister of Mil- itia, being also a marksman. con- demned, in 1912, all cartridges of Quebec make. Being in doubt: as to the scrviceabllity of the Quebec make of the I8-pr. ammunition. Major Weetherbie was ordered up from Halifax to make an inspec- tion of all of Quebec make.

According to the rules governing such inspection all the shell ever made in the Arsenal were found to. be both defective and dangerous to use. For confirmation of this, a firing test. was recommended nnd this was carried out over a tem- porary range on the north bank of the st. Lawrence River some eight miles below Ste. Ann dc Beaupre. This test. showed every shell to be bad. Meanwhile a Commission was asked to be sent out from England. These officers confirmed Major Weatherbie's findings. .

Weetherbie was appointed assist- ant. superintendent and thus to be in full charge of manufacture. He arrived in Quebec on 4th August. 1913. exactly 365 days before war began.

Shells were selected from the new manufacture and sent to War Office. England. in February 1914. In May report was received to the affect. that the new shell were 1007;; good, both physically and mechanically.

Gave Many Lectures

By the time war started. the making of the shell and cases was well established. The Minister, knowing this. strained every effort. to have Canada used as a munitlon supply. When an order was as- sured. the Shell Committee was set, up and manufacturers. both in Canada and the U.S.A.. were urged to come to Quebec to see how shell and cases were being made with a view of participating in munitions manufacture. As the sole person conversant with the new methods. the assistant superintendent had to lecture in the next six weeks to 1600 man-day visitors of would-be munitions makers.

Hitherto. in England. the mak- ing of a shrapnel shell was usually a side line of a large steel firm. Nothing of this existed in Canada with the nearest equivalent in the U. S. A. being. possibly. the United States Steel Corporation.

Canada adopted hitherto un- known methods and initiated the new shadow factory system of turning out shell. The would-be manufacturers who came to Que- bec upon invitation could say what of the 10 different. stages in the making of a complete shell could be done locally so that the various items would now be made in wide- ly different places and manufact- ure perfected in-' ” -"V.

Hnd the British method. both of production and street specification. been followed. insurmountable dif- ficulties would have been met.

In Canada no iron ore mining was being developed. Basic. or open-hearth steel was the material used in America whereas acid, or Bessemer steel was required in shell. The Arsenal's supply of this steel came from Middleborough in

England. The newly made Quebec shell were made from this steel. i

Permission was obtained from Inspection to try the steel Com- pany of Canada pre-war stock of basic steel using the new Quebec forging method. The experimental shell were given double proof and showed that the basic steel was equal to the acid variety. Thus the using of the immense supply of U. B. A. and Canada steel was assur- ed. '

The War Office report of Sep- tember lnle reads: "Canadian steel. The steel used in the manu- facture of Canadian shell is equal, if not superior. to that used in English shell."

As Technical Adviser

Major Weatherbie agreed to act as technical adviser to both the Munition Board and manufactur- ers snd to be on ball when needed. These duties meant travelling 55,- 000 miles during the first several years of the war and this in ad- dition to his work at the Arsenal which was now on a 24-hour basis.

A few points accruing from Gen- ada's war effort may be of inter- est:

(1) Canada. from scratch." fum- ished munitions to the V91!!! 01 31,100 millions.

(2) In 1915. after one year had elapsed. Canada had four million shell in Europe. during which time the U. B. A., where a contract prior to that in Canada. had been award- ed. hsd not produced one on the first million they were to have made at 810 per shell.

(2) The cost of Canada made shrapnel was 36.50 each.

(4) Canada was the first Empire. or other. contractor including Eng- land to supply shell.
