Some Diverting History of the Fiag of the Southern Confederacy.

The flag of the Confederacy, or rather the flags of the Confederacy, had some cu- rious bits of history attached to their exist- ence. On March 5, 1861, the provisional Confederate congress recommended that ‘‘the flag of the Confederate States of America shall consist of a red field, with a white space extending horizontally through the center and equal in width to one-third the width of the flag, the red spaces above and below to be of the same width as the white, the union, blue, ex- tending down through the white spaces and stopping at the lower red space, in the center of the union a circle of white stars corresponding in number w th the states of the Confederacy.’’ It was first displayed in public March 4, 1861, the day of the inauguration of Lincoln, and was unfurled over the statehouse at Montgom- ery, Ala.

On the battlefield the flag bore such a similarity te the Union flag that in Sep- tember, 1861, for the Army of the Potomac, Generals Beauregard and Johnston created what afterward became known as the bat- tle fag—a red ground with a blue diagonal cross ei blazoned with white stars, one for each state. ‘This form was adopted by all of the troops east of the Mississippi river. The first design, bearing the objection of resemblance to the stars and stripes, and the battieflag having no reverse, the Con- federate senate in April, 1863, adopted a white flag, with a broad blue bar in its center, which was amended by inserting the battieflag design as the union, witha plain white ground for the fie‘d. This ar- rangement afterward proved faulty, as at a distance the large white fleld resembled a flag of truce, and also, as combined with the union, was similar to the English white ensign.

On Feb. 4, 1865, the Confederate senate adoptec a third change: ‘‘The width, two- thirds of its length, with the union, now used as a battieflag, to be in width three- fifths of the width of the flag, and so pro- portioned as to leave the length of the field on the side of the union twice the width below it; to have a ground of red and broad blue saltier thereon, bordered with white and emblazoned with mullets or five pointed stars corresponding in number to that of the Confederate states; the field to be white, except the outer half from the union, which shall be a red bar, extending the width of the flag.’’—Ohio Valley Man-

M. T. Wigie, better known to every Cne in the vicinity as “ Uncle Mike,” was troubled for over 23 years with itching piles. At times he was so bad he would have to quit work. ‘The irri- tation became so intense with constant rubbing that they became ulcerated and would bleed. He had been treated by mary physicians, but found nothing that gave him relief. Reading in the paper the cvre of a friend who had suf- fered in a like manner, and being cured by Dr. Chase’s Ointment, he procured a box. After the third application he got such relief that he had the first eomfortable nightgs sleep he enjoyei in years. The one x made a complete cure, and he says he would not be with- out it for $50 a box if it could not be re- placed. Mr. Wigle is a wealthy farmer, well known in the community in which he resides. It is over two years since Se was atHicted, and he has never beea troubled since.
