Ip 1896 Canada sent about 20 per cent of the raw fruits which this couotry imported, not including, of course, oranges and jem - ous. Trial shipments of peaches, pears, tomatoes, and grapes were made by the Canadian Goveroment to Great Britain last year. The latest shipments arrived ip excellent condition, and there is, we under- stand, a prospect of a large trade being de- veloped.Trial shipmeuts arealso to be made by the Canadian Government to Manches- ter direct this year in colu=storage cham- bers. There is, it may at once be siated, no idea ofestablishing any Government de- pots to compete with the whole-sale and retail merchants. “The plan,”we are told, “ia to be open up rew channels for Cana- dian food products, leaving them to he managed entirely by private commercial enterprise, after the qualities of the Cana~ dian products have been made known.”
Mr. Fisher is prepared to supply to Brit ish importers the rames of Canadian ex~ porters of farm products in their several lines, hoping thereby to induce a larger trade between the two countries. “The Jarger _ the quantity,” he says, “of farm products which Great Britain buys from Canada, the greater will be the purchasing ability of the Canadian people for British manufactured goods.” He has decided to enlarge the practical work of the Agricultural De- partment in Cauada. Accompanied by Professor Robertson, Commissioner of Agriculture, he has visited France, and examined tle system of example plots showing the cultivation and growih of farm products at schoolbouses. He hopes soon to inaugurate a system of illustration farm stations in Canada to show the best varieties of grain to grow aod the methods of culture whieh have been most fuccessful in various localities. These are tobe object les°ons for the education aud profit of the agricultural population. Inthis way Canada exp:cts to gaina larger share of the trade in food preducts in Great Britain, and Manchester people may well indulge the hops that the vassels in which they are specially inter- ested will get afair portion of the larger trade.

THE MARKETS.
Not Much Doing for Shipment—Ad- vance in Cheese.
The local egg trade is quiet. What eggs are offering change hands atlic. There is nothing doing in oats or patatoes for shipment, There are no live hogs offers ing.
In Montreal on Monday, according to the Star, cheese sold at from 7c to 73c. The Same paper reports an advance in England of 6d for colored cheese, the quotations being 37+ 6d and 386d. An easier freling is reported in butter. For the finest creamery, the Star says, 174¢ to 18c was the idea, but the latter figure was extreme and d flicult to procure.
Hodgson Bros writing under date of L verpoc], August 29th say :
Cheese bas contiuued in good consump~ tive demand, and the market rules firm with a further hardenirg tendency tor next week. We quote fivest cool coloured Canadian , 393 61 to 403 6d; white, 38s to 383 6d; States coloured, 38s ‘to 383 6d; white, 37 to 38%; mediums are in good re- quest, but supply is small, from 32 to 36s, but there is no demands for low grades.
Butter— Market has been quiet, but with continental and Irish butter further advauced in price, importers are firm on the small lots of fines: Canadian arriv- ing and a little advance has been obtsin- ed. We quote finest Canadian creamery in boxes. 83 to 88+; States. 80 to 84s. Fine ladies and imitation creamery sell fairly well from 60 to 68+; lower grades from 54 to 58s; finest Danish, 90 to 983. Irish
; creamery, 88 to 94s; Cork firsts, 74s; se-
conds 70s; thirds, 683 per cwt.
MURRY HARBOR SOUTH NOTES.
The farmers are now engaged io hars vesting. The wheat crop, particularly the “white chaff,” is seriously damaged in this section.
Mr. W. H. Prowse arrived home Satur- day evening from a trip to Manitoba, Chicago, He is highly pleased wtih his visit and speakes very favourably of some of the piaces he visited, particularly Wionepeg. His brother, Dr. 8. W. Prowse, who accompained him, remained in Winnepeg where he will practice.
Rev. E. Gillis and wife went by S. S. Electra on Mondayon a visit 10 Nova Scotia . As he is just recoveriag from his spe:lofillness the trip, doubtless, will have a beneficiul eftect.
Mr and Mrs Kent, of Montreal, who have been spending some days at Mr J R Prowse’s, left for Montreal on Monday last. Mr. Kent is emplcyed in an office of the G T Railway.

Sin,—In looking over a late copy of that dogmatic journal called the Watchman, I saw avery amusing editoria), in which I was accused of the crime of stealing the honor of promoting the Annandale Bridg> aod Cardigan Sieam Ferry project, frou the writer of the editorial, presumably Mr. McCourt. He also charged me with Rip Vau Winkleism, Now granting ; his own contention that he was the person who—whena few yearsago he made court to the electors of the Cardigan district for the bonor of repre~ seating them in the House of Assembly — caused the ferry docks at Cardigan to be built. Does it not Jook like Rip Van Winkleism, when he seemingly went to sleep for two decades tothe fact that he had taken upon himself the task of secur- ing those much needed public worke for those places? And I make no wonder of the fact, that on waking he feels sur~ prised thatothers have taken his place. But he need notfear. If he wishes bovor the people of Grand River would be quite willing to let him erecta siatue of bim- self, Lolding a copy ofthe Watchman in his band, to proclaim to the weary passers by the self-asserted statement that he was the canse of those works being put in operation, or anything else he thinks may be needed to let the world knowthat it is be whom they should honor.
