Commentary

All students at UPEI are compulsory members of the Canadian Federation of Students. All of us are forced to pay a$4.00 membership fee within our student fees. Most students know very little about CFS other than it gets you discounts at Smitty’s and other busi- nesses. But there is more to it than that. They take stands on issues that affect students across Canada. All organizations get more respect given to their views when they can list a high paid membership. Does the fact the members have no choice but to join effect this at all?

No executive member of the CFS has ever asked me my opinion on issues. No one has ever given mea list of executives to express my grievances to. IfI could tell them my views, would they change their policies? Idon’t think so. Afterall, majority rules. But where did this majority come from? They take stands which they claim to be for the welfare for all students across Canada. They claim only to benefit students, not hurt them.

Just because I am a student, it does not mean that, that is my first consideration. I am a person, an Islander, a Canadian. These parts are just as impor- tant as the student facet of my life if not more so. Should it be forced to be a member of any organiza- tion that Ison’t want to be? An organization that constantly take stands that are against my policies and basic beliefs? I don’t think so. I am tired of people blaming all their problems on other people and run- ning to the federal government for help. These views offend my Canadian sensibilities and I don’t want to be amember of your organization. Ill have my $4.00 back please.
