Big OvsteK Surpments.—The Summer- side Pioneer says that the steamer from that place fur Point du Chene, took away some 750 barrels of oysters on Saturday morn ing, and that there were over $5,500 worth shipped puring the week by the Miramichi. On Thursday, there were nearly a thousand barrels offered as freight, the calm weather being favorable for raking up the bivalve.

lt was showery all yesterday morning, | but the sun was shining at the opening of the Maritime Provinces Amateur Athletic Association. The circular track was in very poor condition, but the hundred yards wis a litile better. There were about 1500 spectators present. Inthe hundred yards d:sh White finished first, Bauld second an Brady third. Time, 102-5. In the

one mile the starters were McIntosh, Creighton, Walsh and McLeod. Melniosh fuished first. Time, 4504. There was great interest in the two hundred and twenty yards run. The _ start- ers were Brady, Power and White. The latter won with lots to spare, nearly two yards, and Brady was second with

Sir John Thompson and Mc. Tupper left for Nova Scotia yesterday afrernoon.

Captain Sherwood, chiet of the Dominion police, received a letter from New York detectives stating that thousands of dollars worth of new Canadian bank notes, signed and ready fur circulation, have been found int a house recently occupied by crooks in that city. Where the notes came from is a mystery.

A Riot in Progress. BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Sept. 27.

A telephone message from Pratt Mines at ten o'clock Friday night announced that a riot was in progress there and help was needed at once. Before particulars could be obtained the telephone was cut. The Sheriff hac gone to the scene with military. The trouble grew out of the killing or fatally injuring of a negro woman by Deputy Sheriff Maxwell. This aroused the negroes, and message later came to the Sheriff and Chief of Police here asking for

Fxhibition Awards Distributed. Paris, Sept. 29. lhe exhibition awards were distributed in the Palace de L’Industrie to-day. Pre- sident Carnot and Premier Tirard made speeches, in which they expressed hearty thanks to the foreign powers and exhibi- tors who ‘had contributed to the great suc- cess and brilliancy of the exhibition. Pre- mier Tirard announced the award of 903 grand prizes, 5,153 gold, 9,690 silver, and 9,323 bronze medals, and 8,070 honorable mentions.

The Strike at Rotterdam.

Rorrerpvam, Sept. 29.

Ata meeting of the strikers on Friday evening it was resolved to exclude all so- cialists from the movement, and to con- duct the strike in an orderly manner. A resolution was adopted, amid cheers for the House of Orange. A workman was ex- pelled from the meeting for attempting to make a socialistic oration. John Burns, the socialist and labor agitator of London, has sent £300 to Rotterdam to aid the strikers.
