OTTAWA (Cm—Canada in the next 15 years must double its present stock of 4.000.000 houses, Stewart Bates, president of Cen- tral Mortgage and Housing Corp— oration said Thursday.

“There are 6,000,000 Canadian children at school today,” he told the final meeting this session of the Senate finance comittee. “They will require more than 3,000,000 homes. It is as simple as that.”

Describing the need tor homes as Canada’s major problem, the head of the federal housing age said there must be an increase in the present annual rate of’ home construction.

An estimated 150,000 homes would: be started in Canada in 1958. This rate would have to be increased if Canada was to meet the needs of future fiamilles, clear slum areas and replace old housing. ’ 1

About 1,200,000 houses had been built in Canada since the end of the Second World War. However, many Canadians still lived under deplorable conditions.
